  • 3 x Spots left - Pat Busch Nature Reserve, Forest & Fynbos Circular Trail

    Pat Busch Mountain Reserve

Please can you share, this unique experience - [Latest Update 13 Going – 3 x places left] - Soulful Weekend Away – Friday 10th – Sunday 12th of July 2020 - Pat Busch Nature Reserve stay, including Fynbos and the lush Indigenous Forest Trail via the hidden waterfall. I have hosted group events at Pat Busch Nature Reserve 4 times in the past and it’s always a treat to discover new parts that we have not explored before as a group. For those that have not been here before, this should be on everyone’s bucket list, especially as you can only visit if you are staying over night I have been looking forward to doing this one again, as we explore the complete Fynbos and the lush Indigenous Forest Trail via the Hidden Waterfall. This is also the first available weekend away that is not fully booked, as all the weekend are all fully blocked out due to its popularity as a wedding venue from September to May. This will certainly be a weekend away not to be missed. Pat Busch Nature Reserve, Established in 1989 - https://www.patbusch.co.za/ BOOKED IN ADVANCE DUE TO THE POPULARITY OF THIS VENUE Please note that these on site activities are offered exclusively to guests staying overnight and are not open to the general public or to day visitors. Pat Busch Nature Reserve is made up of 2000ha of spectacular mountain fynbos with wooded streams & farm dams for swimming & hiking for outdoor enthusiasts, 100 plus species of birds, and spectacular indigenous fauna & flora. The reserve forms part of the Klaasvoogds West foothills in the Langeberg Mountains, 15km between the towns of Robertson & Ashton. Pat Busch Mountain Reserve is surrounded by high mountains at the end of a country road and if we are lucky as it will be in winter, there might even snow on the higher mountain peaks. This venue is just perfect for winter with its indoor cozy lounge and large fireplace. It’s just perfect for a mid-winter hike get-away Here you can see some of Ruth’s awesome pictures from our last group stay in June 2019 - https://flic.kr/s/aHsmEG7gWW #################### "VERY IMPORTANT" -- Please email first or call me directly (Do not just mark yourself as going on Facebook / Meetup) to check for availability and to book on - [masked] or for more info, contact Iain Macdonald on Tel:[masked]- When making a booking, please can you send me your cell number, email address, name & surname and number of people going. You can also send me a message on "whatsapp" Wherever possible we will share the Transport in getting there. #################### Cost: R 1,[masked] per person or if you are not able to pay the full amount, then a 50% deposit to secure your booking with the balance to be paid on the 1st of March 2020. This will be a self- catering option, with shared communal lunch and dinner. Included in the payment will be your self-catering accommodation for the three nights and the various guided activities on offer. The self-catering accommodation where we are staying at is located just 12 km past Roberston or 2h20min from Cape Town. I look forward to you joining us. Love and blessings. Iain #################### This will be a 3 day / 2 night away trip, starting on the Friday from 2pm, with arrival no later than 3pm if you are coming from work for the start of the event and our opening circle. We will be ending on Sunday afternoon from 2.30pm for our closing circle get together and sharing. Please check that you can commit to these times before joining. If you can, try and take Friday off to make most of a long weekend. #################### WHAT IS ON OFFER #################### The Highlight of the weekend away will certainly be the stunning day walk on Saturday, where the route promises to offer some stunning views of the reserve, waterfalls on route and the Langeberge. On the Sunday we will do a shorter trail on the section no covered up to one of the tranquil river pools that offers some awesome views down towards to the dam. The circular trail combines the Hermit and Karin Trail and also includes a detour off to the hidden waterfall -- Trail map - https://www.mapometer.com/walking/route_4828060.html As you go through the gate, turn sharp left and go through the second gate onto the meadow. Walk towards the Willow Trees at the stream in the middle of the meadow. Hop across the stream and then turn sharp right. Follow the trail through the Acacia forest, then along the fence to rise up through & above the Poplar Forest. Here the trail winds steeply up the side of the ridge, it is slow going and steep, take your time, once on top the views are spectacular and the going is easier. Follow the top of the ridge travelling North and to the right of Tafelberg. You will link up with Karin Trail which turns right & zigzags steeply down the side of the mountain to the Kloof & stream below. The Karin section of the Trail is named after Karin Busch, this trail is both beautiful and rewarding and it is one of our most popular trails. It follows the mountain streams along shaded & wooded valleys. Tree ferns, rocks and the gurgling stream are your companions. We recommend this delightfully cool hike during the summer months. It starts on Bergen- Dal behind the big dam, follow the road and take the left fork up the valley, this is Karin Trail and it takes you to behind Tafelberg. The Hermit section of the Trail is named after the legend of an old hermit who used to live in the Langeberg Mountains. Apparently he hoarded a fortune in Kruger Rands and the secret of this treasure was lost when he died. Over the decades the exact position of his mountain home was lost, along with his treasure. In the 1980’s when we cleared the dense vegetation to make our hiking trails we found several exotic lemon trees in the middle of the fynbos forest at the foot of Hermit’s Ridge Trail. Apparently no human had been there in decades! We can only assume that this was the source of the Hermits vitamin C. Hermit’s Ridge Trail starts at the gate near Oak Cottage on Bergendal. ######################### FROM CAPE TOWN - Pat Busch Mountain Reserve - Bergendal Farm, Bergendal Road, Klaasvoogds WEST. If you can, try and take Friday off to make most of a long weekend. #################### WHAT IS ON OFFER ACTIVITIES #################### ABOUT THE WOLFBERG CRACKS ==================== Here is a video of what you might see on route - http://bit.ly/2Oz9bbA Located approximately 1,2km from Sanddrif, at the foot of Wolfberg, is a parking area under oak trees . We will also be exploring the Wolfberg Cracks which is one of the best known and spectacular parts of the magnificent Cederberg. The Wolfberg Cracks are located near Sandrift. It’s about an hour hike up to the start of the cracks. Once on top you are rewarded with spectacular views over the Cederberg. This is a must for all, as we explore the eroded ancient rock formations. There are two way to the top and the right-hand crack is the most rewarding, that always best done in a group, with its winding routes. Within the cracks there are two enormous sand stone arches within the mountain. This one of main break stops to really appreciate this sacred wonder of nature. We will spend more time on the Plateau as we taking in the spectacular views ==================== ABOUT TRUITJIESKRAAL NATURE RESERVE ==================== Here is a video of this sacred site - https://vimeo.com/169700744 Located approximately 9km from Sanddrif. We will be returning visit to Truitjieskraal Nature Reserve near Krom River for a full day experience. - Truitjieskraal arguably boasts the most impressive of these sandstone formations in the area with rock art dating back to 5000 years ago and rock formations formed about 500 million ago. Cape Nature now offers an interpretive trail which takes visitors on an historical journey through San and Khoekhoe cultures spanning millions of years. We briefly visit this sacred site back in 2017 and this time we will be spending more time to explore this ancient wonder. In the words of Liesel Kershoffy, “If you have visited Truitjieskraal before, you would know that it creeps into your soul. It is spiritual, it’s quiet and it demands your respect. Most people whisper as they walk between the rock formations. Truitjieskraal has that effect on you” Truly breath taking sacred nature experience. http://www.climbing.co.za/2013/11/truitjieskraal-areial-view/ Located in Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve east of the rocky Cederberg Wilderness, the newly upgraded Truitjieskraal interpretive trail has been unveiled by CapeNature, while the Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve itself has also been listed as a World Heritage Site. In the Greater Cederberg region there are more than 2500 sites with rock art. To preserve this unique natural and cultural heritage, CapeNature has improved the trail with interpretation which takes visitors on an historical journey through San and Khoekhoe cultures spanning millions of years CapeNature CEO, Dr Razeena Omar, says: “People have cared for this landscape for thousands of years. The rock art and artefacts left behind by the indigenous people is so valuable and cannot be replaced, so it is vital that we preserve these memories and ensure future generations have access to this unique natural and cultural heritage.” “On the Truitjieskraal trail, you now will find interesting insights about the lifestyles of people who have lived there, how the landscape formed, how plants and animals contribute to it and how dynamic ecological processes continue to change it,” adds Dr Omar. ==================== CEDERBERGOBSERVATORY ==================== Cederberg Observatory for Star Gazing under the night sky - http://www.cederbergobs.org.za Duration: Approximately two hours, starting at 20h00. Only open on Saturday evenings – weather permitting. On most Saturday evenings (weather permitting) the observatory opens its doors to members of the public to come and enjoy what the observatory has to offer. The observatory is not staffed on full moon weekends. When the moon is full, one cannot see much else as the moon is too bright. All other weekends a short slide show is followed by some viewing through a telescope or two. A variety of objects will be viewed for example, planets, comets, nebulae, open clusters, globular clusters, planetary nebulae and of course any galaxies that may be visible. What is viewed will depend on what is visible in the night sky for that time of year and also the phase of the moon as well as weather conditions. These public viewing evenings introduce members of the public to the wonders of the night sky as well as serving as the main source of income for the observatory to develop further. The observatory is a owned by non-profit organization of seven partners and was commissioned in the early 1980s, it has developed into an amateur astronomers paradise. The classic observatory dome houses a 16" telescope and a shed with a roll-off roof is home to another. Piers have been set up as polar-aligned mounts for portable telescopes (with power points) and there are a couple of home-made Newtonian telescopes available for general use. ==================== STADSAAL CAVES & BUSHMEN PAINTINGS ==================== Video of the views at Matjiesrivier Stadsaal Caves - http://bit.ly/35lNHVK The Stadtsaal, sometimes spelt Stadsaal, caves are a series of ancient inter-leading caves in the Cederberg Wilderness that hold excellent examples of !Xam (more often called San) rock art, in particular paintings of elephant. The !Xam lived in the Cederberg for over[masked] years, but stopped painting about 200 years ago, disrupted by European colonialists. The immediate craggy, almost other-wordly landscape is filled with eroded rock formations in burnt orange, amber, reds and yellows. Against the blue of the sky, it is incredible; the stuff of photographs. Don’t miss the Stadsaal Caves and San rock paintings of elephants that were painted at least 1000 years ago. Weather permitting we go here for sunrise or sunset. ==================== DISA POOL & WATERFAL HIKE ==================== Video of the views at the waterfall at the end of the Trail - http://bit.ly/35lNHVK Hike up to the breath taking waterfall along the Krom River via Krom cave. This is a fairly easy hike from Kromrivier campsite up-river to Disa Pool. – Distance 8km - https://www.mapometer.com/walking/route_4969180.html ==================== MAALGAT ==================== Duration: 35 minutes in a downstream direction from Sanddrif. A huge swimming hole, approximately 50m long and 30m wide, with 8m and 11m high cliffs – definitely for those crazy enough to jump! Also known by some as the “Seekoeigat / Hippo pool”. If you don’t swimming, this section offers a relaxing trail to take in the awesome views. ==================== VALLEY OF THE RED GODS ==================== Valley of the Red Gods : a rocky slope between Sanddrif and the Shale Band below the Wolfberg Cracks, named for the array of extraordinary rock pillars there that glow in the light of the setting sun. It is the region’s brooding atmosphere, its sense of agelessness that has this effect. It is what stirs the imagination. It must have been like that for the old settlers. The names they gave the various sites say it all. In the Valley of the Red Gods, the imagery shows itself most spectacularly in the glow of the setting sun. The columns of red-rock pillars along the mountain slope all seem to lean forward together in supplication towards the mountain towering over them ==================== THE CEDERBERG CONSERVANCY. ==================== This vast wilderness area, covering almost[masked] ha. The Cederberg is famous for its spectacular rock formations. The best known are the Wolfberg Cracks, Wolfberg Arch, Maltese Cross and Stadsaal Caves. These rocks are composed of sandstone and shale formations of the Cape Supergroup. The formations were deposited between 500 and 345 million years ago. Some formations such as the Bokkeveld Group are rich in marine fossils such as trilobites, brachiopods and crinoids. (Please remember that all fossils are National Monuments, protected by Law, and may not be disturbed or removed). The Cederberg gives its name to the Cederberg Formation, a narrow shale band that is locally referred to as "Die Trap" or in English "The Step", because of its characteristic manner in which it weathers. The harder sandstone and quartzitic formations such as the Peninsula, Nardouw and Witteberg tend to form the higher mountainous areas, while the softer shale formations such as the Bokkeveld and Cederberg form fertile valleys. The Cederberg's spectacular rock formations result from a number of factors including the flat lying nature of the geology, well defined fracture and jointing patterns, chemical composition of the rocks, climatic conditions and time #################### ACCOMMODATION ON OFFER #################### A constellation of six fully equipped self-catering cottages, each with its own individual charm and special features. Best of all as we are hiking along the Indian Ocean, the sea will be awesome for swimming along the way. @@@ Due to the popularity of this trail, one needs to book a year in advance to get availability This trail offers the best of Coastal Fynbos, beach views rich marine life on route, while staying in luxury accommodation on route. The trail has also been recently opened, with an accommodation upgrade. Here you can see the accommodation on offer - https://tinyurl.com/rdwvmf2 -- Each Accommodation chalet, has three bedrooms, with 4 beds in each room The Whale Trail starts at Potberg Hut in De Hoop Nature Reserve, which is located just 3 hours from Cape Town where you will spend the night before – this gives your group the chance to be briefed on the hike by the rangers (including information on the terrain, wildlife, flora, safety, emergency evacuation, cell phone reception etc.) and pack your food and luggage into the containers which are provided on the slack-packing option The trail traverses one of the Western Cape’s most unique and diverse nature reserves while providing nature lovers and those who love the outdoors with unique comfortable overnight accommodation situated at spectacular locations. The route stretches over 55 km from Potberg to Koppie Alleen and includes five overnight stops. The trail offers the opportunity to explore the unsurpassed natural diversity of the De Hoop Nature Reserve, where the fragrance of fynbos on the Potberg Mountains and the unique limestone fynbos plains intermingle with the salty sea air of the marine protected area. Along the way, hikers can marvel at the abundance of indigenous plants while looking for members of the last remaining vulture colony in the Western Cape, numerous other bird species and small antelope. Here’s a link to a video of the De Hoop Nature Reserve, where the route is located in - https://vimeo.com/143846825 - De Hoop is one of the largest natural areas managed by CapeNature. We will be staying in the Stormsriver Village for the night before and after the trail. This trail is booked in advance due to limited availability of this popular nature trail that has limited places. I have also booked the trail and accommodation for our sole used to enhance the group experience. Here’s a link to a video of the Famous Tsitsikamma Hiking Trail – Route Summary - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-d_rPVCKJ58 More details view of route - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKMZq8qFdDY - Even if you don’t join us on the hike, this video is worth Watching at as it gives a real sense of what can be seen in the area. Tsitsikamma is an old Khoisan word that means ‘place of many waters.’ We like to refer to this wonderful hiking adventure as the Tsitsikamma Mountain Trail. The Tsitsikamma Mountain Trail journeys through extensive patches of extensive patches of indigenous mountain forest and fynbos. Ancient river gorges and abundant rivers and streams provide plentiful swimming opportunities. Beginning in Nature’s Valley and ending 60-km further at either the Storms River Bridge or Village, this six day, unidirectional trail takes hikers through the heart of the Tsitsikamma Mountains. Baboon, vervet monkey, large-spotted genet, bushpig and bushbuck are often encountered along the route and at overnight huts. Leopard, caracal, honey badger and blue duiker also occur, but are seldom seen. The forests provide ideal habitat for lesser seen bird species, such as rameron pigeon, narina trogon, sombre bulbul, forest buzzard, and colourful sunbirds and flycatchers. The fynbos harbours elusive endemics such as Victorins warbler, protea canary and the Cape siskin. I have also included this trail, with Equipment Porterage, so all you will need to carry is your day pack. Your equipment will be transported between the overnight huts on this spectacular hiking trail. The trail distance over the 6 days will be 60km. We will be staying at self-catered accommodation. On the night before and after at the Tsitsikamma Backpackers that offers a variety of accommodation option on a first come first serve. They have a range of good accommodation from lovely tented units on platforms, private rooms with en suite and shared bathrooms as well as dorm rooms with en suite bathrooms. Here you can see a video link of the what’s on offer - https://youtu.be/Jon8zfeNn4g This four stars accredited backpacker’s offers double, dorm rooms and glamping tented units in an indigenous garden setting. Daily breakfast and dinner is served with vegetarian options. Our bar area is the perfect place to sit back and relax after an adventure-filled day The highlight of this trail will be that we won’t have to carry any backpacks apart from a day pack. I have arranged that all our weekend away luggage and equipment will be ported to each accommodation stay. The reason why this booked in advance is to secure the limited accommodation on the trail, as the public holiday dates book out first for 2021 ######################### Have you heard of the term Slack packing?
