A new choral experiment called The Song Project emerged from the Manhattan sidewalks in early 2018, a community chorus for inexperienced adult singers. As well as singing folk, pop, gospel in all sorts of musical arrangements, I occasionally found myself introducing improvisation around sacred songs in simple harmonic sequences, which proved really moving for the participants.
Sad to say I soon have to leave NYC to return to the UK. These 2 workshops are kinda my musical leaving party, if you like - and open to all.
We will learn sacred songs from various traditions, experiencing the power and beauty of exploring spirituality and music as a group. Then after some introduction to harmonization, we will experiment with spontaneous improvisation. Be reassured: even for absolute beginners, IT WORKS!
Even if you have never dipped your toes in this sort of musical water before, you will find yourself taken up into the flow. It is glorious to experience and - be warned - potentially life-changing!
The workshops are open to all, and the music will be taught by ear, so no music reading skills are required.
Instrumental players who are able to ornament simple chord sequences are also welcome.
You only need bring your good-natured and generous self, open to listen and express yourself together with others.
Donations are invited $5 - $20
