South Sound Garden Club - Mosaic Class and Luncheon - UPDATE

From: Keri
Sent on: Monday, August 15, 2011 3:04 PM

Hi All,

We will be having a mosaic class and Garden Club Potluck luncheon from 11:00 to 2:00 pm this Saturday out under my covered patio at my home. If you have RSVP'd Yes for this event, please change if you are unable to attend.

If you would like to attend, but don't want to do a mosaic piece, you are welcome to still come and socialize - just need to bring something for the potluck.

I will be supplying chicken from Albertson for the main dish (figured that there would not be time to BBQ), along with homemade coleslaw salad. The rest is potluck so please comment under this event what you plan to bring in order to prevent duplicates.

We have one person bringing dessert, so looking for more sides, chips/dip, additional dessert, etc...

I will also have bottled water, some soda (including diet cola), ice tea and plan to make strawberry daquiris for those that enjoy that type of drink. If what you like to drink is not on list, please bring what you like.

Please park in front of house (plenty of room) and keep driveway clear.

I will be supplying the adhesive for everyone's piece, but if you want to get the type all-in-one adhesive/grout you can bring that. Remember this may not be quite as long lasting in the garden where there is a lot of weather (can crack easier), but may be fine if you take inside during winter.

1 small item that you would like to turn into mosaic piece for your garden (the sky's the limit - pots, plates, tile, even wood etc. - see garden mosaic photos for more ideas).

Enough material to cover your piece (broken pottery, marbles, glass stones, glass, found objects, etc.). If this is your first mosaic piece, I recommend larger pieces to adhere, but keep in mind if piece has curves - will need to have smaller pieces in those curved areas.

Walmart has good selection of bags of glass stones in their fish aquarium section for cheap (at craft store they are up to 4.99 a bag - Walmart had them for under 2.00 a bag), along with some small stones in their craft area.

1 pair of rubber gloves (prefer the lightweight type - keeps the adhesive off of your hands)

You can also pick up grout to finish your piece at this time, but will be grouting the following day on your own time. If the gaps between material being adhered is over 1/8" the grout holds better if it has sand in it. Smooth grout is fine for pieces adhered closer together.

This class will take us through the attachment of your mosaic to your item, but this needs to dry overnight to set properly. I will have a piece of mine that requires grouting to show everyone to how to learn that process also (it is very simple).

Please comment under event if you have any additional questions or comments.
