#26 Test Legend Michael Bolton “Not So Great Expectations”

We are back for our next online event and are super excited to have Testing Legend Michael Bolton speaking to us all the way from Canada! For those of you who don't know, Michael Bolton is a consulting software tester and testing teacher, who helps people to solve testing problems that they didn’t realize they could solve. In 2006, he became co-author with James Bach of Rapid Software Testing (RST) - some of you may remember him from when he came and did a talk for us last year. RST is a methodology and mindset for testing software expertly and credibility in uncertain conditions, and under extreme time pressure. Since then, he has flown over a million miles to teach RST in 35 countries on six continents. Michael has 25 years of experience testing, developing, managing, and writing about software. For the last 18 years, he has led DevelopSense, a Toronto-based testing and development consultancy. Prior to that, he was with Quarterdeck Corporation for eight years, where he managed the company’s flagship products and directed project and testing teams both in-house and around the world. We can’t wait to hear him talk! We will be sharing the link nearer the time and as always we have to say a big thanks to our sponsors SR2 - Socially Responsible Recruitment for their support in helping us to be able to continue our meetups online ❤ The plan for the evening 18:00 Brief intro with Sam 18:05 “Not So Great Expectations” by Michael Bolton Even though people have come to expect "expected result" and "actual result" in bug reports, Michael Bolton believes that there are problems with that pattern. According to him, the word "expectation" is ambiguous, with several common and sometimes conflicting meanings. Something that we expect may not be what we anticipated, and something that we anticipated may not be what we want. Whose expectations are we talking about? And where do those expectations come from? In this talk, Michael will identify the bugs he sees in the idea and expression of "expected results", and he'll offer some workarounds to help testers describe and justify the bugs they observe. Followed by Questions and Answers --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The event is open to all: Although this is billed as a "Test" meet up it's not just for Testers, it's open to anyone who wants to join in to hear some amazing talks and interact with some lovely like-minded people. Please do share the meetup details with your friends, workmates or anyone who you think would love to attend. If you want to join us over on Slack - Please feel free to do so: https://goo.gl/JRgFwK We also have a meetup Twitter account (https://twitter.com/south_west_test) - Please follow us and drop us a message if you need to get in touch.
