With heavy hearts, we announce the shutting down of the Southeast Michigan Oracle User Professionals (SEMOP) user group. SEMOP, formerly known as the Detroit Oracle User Group (DOUG), served as a beacon of knowledge, collaboration, and friendship within the Oracle community for over four decades. It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to this beloved institution, as it draws its final breath at the end of 2023.
SEMOP was born from a simple desire for knowledge and camaraderie in the world of Oracle technology. In 1986, it opened its doors to individuals seeking answers, support, and connections. The legacy of SEMOP was shaped by countless dedicated volunteers, passionate members, and the tireless efforts of those who believed in its mission.
For over 36 years, SEMOP provided a platform for Oracle enthusiasts to share their wisdom, network with like-minded professionals, and overcome the challenges presented by Oracle Forms, databases, and the ever-evolving tech landscape. It was a place where, as Nancy Somers once noted, there was always a workaround, and where solutions and friendships were forged.
In its prime, SEMOP was one of several thriving local and regional Oracle user groups, including DOUG, MOUS, GLOC, Ann Arbor Oracle User Group, Western Michigan Oracle User Group, Midwest Oracle User Group, Toledo User Group, and the International Oracle User Group (IOUG). However, the changing landscape of technology and the rise of online resources, such as Google and YouTube, have reshaped the way knowledge is shared, leading to the gradual decline of these once-thriving user groups.
The global pandemic, COVID-19, only accelerated the inevitable decline of in-person conferences and gatherings, further impacting SEMOP's ability to thrive. As the world shifted towards online platforms, the next generation of Oracle professionals also embraced different ways of learning and networking, which posed challenges for the traditional user group format.
Though SEMOP's final chapter has arrived, its legacy lives on in the memories and connections forged over the years. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated volunteers, speakers, attendees, and members who made SEMOP a vibrant and nurturing community.
Special recognition goes to Brian Laskey, whose unwavering commitment and stewardship as treasurer kept the user group on a steady course throughout the decades.
In honor of over 40 years of existence, SEMOP invites all those who have attended user group events or have been friends of the user group to join in a final night of networking and remembrance. This event will take place on Wednesday, December 6th, at 7:00pm, at the Rusty Bucket located at 18785 Traditions Dr, Northville, MI 48167. SEMOP will provide appetizers as a token of appreciation for the shared experiences and camaraderie.
As we say our farewells, let us remember the many lessons learned, the connections made, and the friendships established through SEMOP. May the spirit of SEMOP live on in the hearts of all who were touched by its enduring presence in the Oracle community.
