Hiking weekend away, YHA Cholderton near Stonehenge, Wiltshire

• What we'll do:

Affordable 2 day hiking weekend with free distant view of Stonehenge and 1 overnight stay Saturday night.

Leave early Sat. morning, stay Sat. night at YHA Cholderton, on a Rare Breeds Farm in Wiltshire near Stonehenge World Heritage site. Hike Saturday and Sunday, return Sunday evening.

COST AND PAYMENT:
Cost £22.50 includes one night bed only budget accommodation in single-gender shared room (typically 4 - 6 beds, possibly more) with 10% YHA members' discount. Actual cost when we book may be slightly less. Anyone under 26 gets a further 5% discount.

Not included: Breakfast, other meals & transport.

Min. 4, max. 10. Pay by 18/08/2019.

TRANSPORT OPTIONS
Own car or car sharing, 95 mls each way plus 15 mls for local trips = 205 mls total. For car sharing, suggested contribution to driver is 205 mls @ 7.5p = £15.38 return for each passenger. Meet outside Barnet Everyman at junction of Station Road and Great North Road EN5 1AB at 08:00 Saturday, not High Barnet station as previously mentioned. If you travel independently, meet us outside YHA Cholderton 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

ACCOMMODATION
YHA accommodation in shared single gender room (bunk beds). Shower and toilet facilities may be shared or we may be able to book some en-suite rooms.

MEALS
Prepare your own food in the self-catering kitchen or buy breakfast, packed lunch, evening meal at YHA Cholderton or have a pub meal Saturday evening.

ARRIVAL TIME SATURDAY
Arrive 10:00 a.m. Saturday, check-in open 17:00 - 21:00.

HIKING PLANS
Saturday: From Cholderton, drive 5 mls to Amesbury, circular hike Woodhenge - Stonehenge*, Normanton, Amesbury 9.6 miles, 15.6 km.
*We pass about 100 m from Stonehenge on open access land which gives a distant view for free (see photo). For a closer look, you need to walk 2 km to the Stonehenge Visitor Centre, pay £19.50 (£17.50 if booked in advance and free to members of National Trust and English Heritage). Come back to visit Stonehenge on a shuttle bus then walk back to Amesbury independently.

Sunday: Drive 3 mls to Shipton Bellinger, circular hike on the Wiltshire-Hampshire border to Kimpton 8.4 mls.

• What to bring

For hikes: Hiking boots with good grip (footpaths may be slippery or muddy in places), suitable outdoor clothing for weather conditions including extra layer for outdoor stops and waterproof jacket for rain. The £22.50 is all for accommodation and any surplus will be refunded in cash on the weekend. In addition, we also invite you to donate £2 per day (total £4) towards the running costs of this Meetup Group.
