Winter Hike
Visit Vernon Wildlife Area to enjoy the crisp beauty of winter. Join local DNR wildlife staff and look for signs of plants and animals hunkered down for winter. Dress for the weather. A bright hat and/or shirt is recommended, as various hunting seasons are going on at this time. Dogs are allowed on this hike. Program is free and open to the public. We’ll be meeting at 9:30AM at GPS coordinates:[masked], [masked]. Directions are below. If you have any questions, feel free to call or email the morning of the hike, or in the days prior to the hike. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you! Hwy 43: Take exit 43 in Mukwonago. Turn North on Hwy 83. Take an immediate right on the frontage road/Holz Parkway (towards the Park ‘n Ride). Follow for 2 miles; road becomes County Highway NN. Immediately after the railroad tracks, turn right. You will see a Vernon Wildlife Area, DNR brown wooden sign to the right of the drive. Go straight down the dirt road and park past the large shed. Hwy 83: Turn east on County Highway NN. (From 83 North, turn left just after Pick N Save. From 83 South, drive through Mukwonago and turn right after Park View Middle School.) Go 0.5 miles and turn left at the Vernon Wildlife Area, DNR brown wooden sign. If you cross the railroad tracks, you’ve gone too far. Go straight down the dirt road and park past the large shed

If you enjoy hiking and new experiences, this is the group for you! We schedule monthly hikes on State properties around Southeast Wisconsin, including State Parks, Forests, and Wildlife Areas. Hike topics include winter wildlife tracking, wildflower, bird, and butterfly identification, as well as habitat management tours. If you enjoy hiking new areas and learning as much as possible while in the outdoors, come join in the fun!
