Look for the little pull-over area to the right--just before reaching the admission gate. You will find me there. Everyone may park behind and follow me through the NBG admission gate. Each attendee must arrive at this meeting point promptly by 11 AM or else will need to pay admission at the gate. We will park in front of the very first building to the left which is the Administration Building. Our first stop will be at MARIGOLD & HONEY CAFE at 11:15 for brunch on the patio. At 12 noon we will board the tram for a scenic guided tour highlighting the history and key attractions located throughout the park. Finally, we will set out on foot. Norfolk Botanical Gardens offers 3.7 miles of walking trails, including a .9 mile Scenic Trail; the 1.6 mile Lake Trail; and 1.8 mile Forest Trail, good for all skill levels. Our membership with Norfolk Botanical Gardens permits us to welcome up to six (6) guests. This means access to the park, free of charge, for those willing to arrive promptly by 11 AM. Again, it is very important to arrive on time promptly by 11 AM to join us. Otherwise you will be required to pay a $10 admission fee at the gate ($8.00 for seniors). If you are so inclined, the $100 annual membership is the better value; $160 for 2-year membership better yet. A membership entitles you to, among other things, a 10% savings off everything in the cafe and the gift shop.

What we're about

You will surely be inspired to apply your "photo journalist" skills as you immerse yourself in the abundant beauty and tranquility of the natural world--exploring many of the area's more obscure nature trails and footpaths with other like-minded souls. Celebrate the colors, smells and other characteristics unique to each season. Bring the dogs--so long as they are leashed! And the kiddies! You may have to twist an arm in the beginning but both you and your children will be richly rewarded if you can encourage the abandonment of video games and hand-held devices in favor of gathering wildflowers, smelling the sweet scent of pine carried on spring breezes, or spotting a family of deer or nesting robins. As a Weekend Woodland Wanderer, you will enjoy scenic walks that are relatively low-impact and not as intense as events for our true hikers--or those aspiring to be. However, we trust that dogs and kiddies will help to keep everyone else moving at a brisk, healthy pace.

FOR OUR HARDCORE ASPIRING HIKERS, with sights set on conquering the Appalachian Trail or similar objectives, we will be calling upon the services of both experienced hikers as well as professional trainers as we include more intense walks and workouts designed to reduce weight and build strength and endurance.
