Yuri’s Night (https://yurisnight.net) is a global celebration of humanity’s past, present, and future in space. Yuri’s Night parties and events are held around the world every April in commemoration of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first human to venture into space on April 12, 1961, and the inaugural launch of the first Space Shuttle on April 12, 1981.

In 2011, the 50th anniversary of human spaceflight, over 100,000 people attended 567 officially-recognized events in 75 countries on all 7 continents, while tens of thousands more watched the 12-hour live Yuri’s Night Global Webcast and participated online in the virtual world of Second Life. Since then, the celebrations have only gotten bigger and bolder.

Let's celebrate by getting together at (how perfect) Moon's! It's $10 pizza night and their taps are always excellent. There is a band (free) on at 7pm so any discussions will have to be done by then, but the 'party' part can go as late as you want! Any suggestions on a focus topic for discussion? They said we could have a presentation if we wrapped it up by 6pm - if there is interest, I could pull a few slides about Yuri Gagarin from my Russian Space History lecture - but, I'm going to try to find someone more interesting than me if at all possible ;)

Hope to see you there and spread the word so we have a great attendance - we'll be the first Yuri's Night party in the world! (Auckland doesn't get going till 8pm... :)
