MEDITATION: I have two scripts here. The first gives you guidance on how to address these unwanted emotions. Welcome the environment and sounds around you: the air on your skin, sensations where your body touches the surface that’s supporting it, the feeling of an emotion that’s present in your body. Now note where and how you feel this emotion, and describe the sensations that best represent this emotion. The meditation is going to ask you to look at an emotion that is in your body. We then move on to be given another tool.

HANDOUT FOR DISCUSSION: Emotions, the two Minds. In Zen, they explain this weird phenomenon by referring the two minds as the thinking mind and the observing mind. The problem with the thinking mind is that we don’t have complete control over it. The intrusive thoughts you may experience throughout the day or before bed illustrate the disconcerting fact that many of the functions of the mind are outside of conscious control. Whether we maintain true control over any mental functions is the central debate about free will.
