What we're about

Chessmates is for anyone who enjoys chess. We welcome both beginners as well as those who more experienced and those who play to win. We are about to become a club of the New Zealand Chess Federation and step up a little: we will challenge other clubs and organise some tuition in chess for those who want to go a little deeper. We meet in the Ellen Melville Centre in Freyberg Square and afterwards we do some serious game analysis at the Occidental over a beverage of choice, for some Hoegaarden and for others apple juice etc, and talk about whatever takes our fancy. You are very welcome!

Chess Lessons for Kids

Ellen Melville Centre

Chessmates - Chess Lessons for Kids (6-12 years old)

Our club has some great teachers of chess. Chess has become big in New Zealand but that can change. There are some potential Magnus Carlsens and Hou Yifans out there in Auckland! (Magns Carlsen is current world champion and Hou Yifan was 4x world grandmaster and the world's best female player). So bring your kids along!

Chess is the oldest board game that we still play! Learning chess teaches kids valuable thinking skills, and it’s a lot of fun.

Join the Splice Chessmates teachers for the basics - and beyond!

Time: 3.00pm to 4.30pm, every Sunday

Location: Ellen elville Centre, Freyberg Square (temporarily while the Auckland Central City Library Makerspace is unavailable)

Cost: Free

Registrations are essential! Parents, please register your child by
