Morning Ride at Weekie Wachee Preserve
Weeki Wachee Preserve, 2345 Oswowaw Boulervard, Spring Hill, FL, USCome out and join me for a relaxed & casual off-road bike ride in this beautiful and unique area. It will be a 8-10-mile loop (mol) on flat, single/double track trail which are mostly composed of a hard lime rock bottom, some hard clay with occasional patches of sand. This time of year, I'm not expecting any wet areas but, you never know. We will ride between lakes, "mountains" :-), forests, and taking a few out & backs for scenery. For those that might like a little challenge, you'll have an opportunity to ride up Mt. Weeki Wachee, take in the awesome view at the top and then ride back down. You can choose to walk it up/down. It's worth the effort and a great place to take a break. The route is mostly open and in full sun. Although, we'll get some shade when we ride down a well forested road in the northern part of the preserve (good spot to see wildlife) This is NOT a pedal hard and shred the trail ride. It's more like a hike on a bike and sightseeing. Wildlife in the preserve: migratory birds (I've seen White Pelicans) deer, coyote, bobcat, gators, bald eagles, and there is a population of black bear. They are very shy, elusive and stay mainly deep in the forest.
We roll right at 9am so, please get there in enough time to gear up. No restrooms at the trailhead, there is a pit toilet/porta pod in the middle of the preserve but, we will not be passing there until the tail end of our ride. Lots of woods, though. :-) No parking or entrance fees. Ending time is an estimate. If you're in a hurry or on a time constraint then, this event is not for you.
NOTE Please do not confuse this with Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. Address, map, & push pin are correct on the event page.
Requirements to participate: some offroad experience, a bike capable of being in the dirt with mountain bikes being ideal. Hybrids are typically fine, helmet, hydration and tools with the know how to fix minor repairs especially flat tires.
Some other items to consider: energy snacks, sunblock, bug repellent, closed toe shoes, riding gloves,
Afterwards: If anyone has interest in getting a bite: We can take the short drive to The Lazy Lizard 3192 Shoal Line Blvd, Hernando Beach, FL 34607 www.facebook.com/thelazylizardhb
