Online shopping sites like Amazon and Ebay popularized the user experience of typing the name of the item you want to buy into a search bar and using filters to narrow your results by price, size, and color. Law enforcement data systems are traditionally fielded searches with rigid criteria constraints. Tools such as Apache Solr supply the framework for free-text search capabilities used in online shopping, and we will discuss the high-level steps involved in making easy-to-use investigative search tools for law enforcement. Touching on a little Natural Language Processing (NLP), we will also show what's involved in customizing a search application to fit a particular use case or business rules. Whether you're building a search app yourself or you just buy stuff on Amazon, this talk will show you some of the behind-the-scenes of the ubiquitous search bar.
