=========================================
Sometimes you just have to let things go and live free. Why not live free from the constraints of databases and storing state? In other languages we are encouraged to store transient state. How can we let go of this notion? What data can we let go of? What new challenges do we face?
=========================================
What makes state transient? What state do we need to hold onto forever? I come from a world with queues, threading, and processes used to run background jobs. State is even stored in the database for session data. Do we need this data to be stored in a database? What happens when that data is the source of our failure?
In Elixir we can keep state around in our processes without passing them off to another system like redis or a traditional database. What challenges and considerations does this shift create? Can we build a system that is fault tolerant, but reduces or dependencies on outside systems? We can stop throwing things over the wall and start living in harmony when we embrace processes.
