Game Recap 2014-06-07

Game # 1: Scenario SH60—Practice, practice, and then what?

This historical scenario takes place during a training scenario wherein a Gorn Heavy Destroyer and a Federation New Light Cruiser are engaged in a computer-simulated exercise against a Romulan Sparrowhawk-A. The exercises are meant to train captains to fight against the three plasma torpedo launchers of the Romulan ship. During one distinct occasion, however, an actual Romulan ship showed up and attacked the two enemy ships—both apparently disabled! The Federation and Gorn ships’ systems are offline and in computer-simulation mode when the battle begins.

For this scenario, James played the Federation and Gorn ships, while Tony played the Romulan. James began by deploying his shuttles (all eight of them!) as quickly as possible. Tony maneuvered around the Federation ship and gave chase to the Gorn HDD. A massive first strike against the HDD destroyed it, ending Turn 1.

On Turn 2, Tony maneuvered around and made a pass at the Federation ship, which had regained some of its systems. The shuttles moved into a protective position around the NCL. James fired at the Romulan ship, doing moderate damage to its shields and penetrating for some internal hits. Tony launched another plasma torpedo, which the shuttles fired at to reduce its strength before it impacted the Federation ship. The Romulan then moved into and through the hex of the NCL, launching a 0-range phaser attack.

On Turn 3, the Romulan ship performed a High-Energy Turn and launched torpedoes and phasers at the Federation ship. The shuttles began orbiting the NCL to protect it, but set off the transporter bomb that had been laid by the Romulan on its way through the hex. All of the remaining shuttles were destroyed. The Federation NCL launched its photon torpedoes and phasers, penetrating the shields of the Romulan and scoring internal damage. The Romulan attack caused severe damage to the NCL.

On Turn 4, faced with a losing battle, James self-destructed. The battle was a marginal victory for the Romulan ship.

Game # 2: Scenario SH60—Practice, practice, and then what? (Variation)

We replayed the same scenario, but substituted a training crew of a Klingon D5 and Lyran War Cruiser against a Kzinti Medium Cruiser. James played the Kzinti, while Tony played the Klingons and Lyrans.

The Lyran ship began with significant systems offline and only moved at speed 3. The Klingon ship moved to intercept drones and shuttles. Both sides launched their shuttles to harass the enemy.

The Kzinti ship made a drone attack at medium range against the Lyran ship using scatterpacks, then turned and engaged the Klingon ship at short range. The Klingon ship, despite phasers and Anti-Drones, was overwhelmed—its shields were penetrated and some minor internal damage was scored. The Lyran ship used its phasers to take out most of the incoming drones.

On Turn 2 the Kzinti ship performed an HET and finished off the Klingon ship using a second scatterpack. (Note: The Klingon ship missed THREE POINT-BLANK DISRUPTOR hits with a 5 in 6 chance of hitting! Three sixes were rolled! For the love of the gods, WHY?!?) The Kzinti ship continued its assault on the Lyran CW.

On Turn 3 the Kzinti assault finished the Lyran cruiser. This was a definitive victory for the Kzinti.
