Game recap from 12-17-2011

Here is the recap of the Gorn vs. ISC battle:

The ISC (Dave, Geoff, and myself) started in the pre-set formation defined by the scenario, with three ranks of ships. The Gorn (Nick, Gren, and James) opted to stack five of their six ships in the same hex to concentrate their fire, leaving their scout ship ten hexes behind (and away from the action). The Gorn launched an ungodly HORDE of plasma torpedoes at the ISC formation ships, then veered away. As the torpedoes neared their targets, the ISC used its PPDs to soften up one of the Gorn Battle Destroyers. However, the incoming torpedoes caused the ISC formation to split down the middle, with half of the ships pursuing the Gorn while the other half turned away to hopefully gain a good solution against the incoming torpedoes. The first half were able to use Wild Weasels to distract the torpedoes. The second half were not so lucky, and one of the ISC FFs was obliterated.

The Gorn raced away from the ISC during turn two, using the time to begin recharging their plasmas. The trailing ISC ships regrouped, and moved into position to support their comrades. By turn three, the Gorn had turned and were once again moving toward the first group of ISC ships. The ISC again pounded the Gorn with their PPDs. The ISC then turned away. The Gorn pursued, and began a brutal assault on the ISC Flagship Cruiser, but their tight formation was broken as the ships separated to maintain optimum firing positions. The ISC Cruiser countered with plasma torpedoes and phasers, and caused significant damage to the Gorn Heavy Destroyer. The Cruiser was BADLY damaged in the exchange and rendered powerless. The Gorn used transporters to attempt to capture the ISC Cruiser. However, the ISC successfully self-destructed the ship.

The remaining two ships from the first ISC group had circled around, and launched a fatal attack on the Gorn BDD, which had already been weakened from PPD damage earlier. The ship was destroyed. Meanwhile, the second group of ISC ships attacked the Gorn Dreadnaught and Heavy Cruiser. The Dreadnaught was damaged, but not severely. The Gorn countered with another plasma torpedo assault.

At this point, we ran out of time and had to call it quits. The Gorn still had several torpedoes in the air--a plasma-R and two plasma-Fs aimed at the ISC Light Cruiser, and a torpedo racing toward the remaining ISC Destroyer. The two ISC ships that obliterated the BDD were moving to engage the Gorn Heavy Scout, which had been lending EW points throughout the combat to mitigate the damage from the ISC weapons.

The score at the time we stopped was: Gorn--300, ISC--237. This was a Marginal Victory for the Gorn. The Gorn team certainly would have been able to widen its margin of victory at least a little had we been able to continue. Both sides would have been able to score additional damage to their opponents.

Both teams did well. The Gorn made very effective use of their plasma torpedoes, and were able to gain good firing positions throughout the game. The ISC players made a tactical error early in the game (when the second group of ISC ships failed to launch their Wild Weasels to distract the incoming torpedoes), but they were still able to mostly hold their own against the Gorn attackers, which is no easy feat.

Well, that's about it. This was an excellent battle, and well-fought by both sides.

We will be scheduling another meetup for sometime in January. As soon as more details are known, they will be posted.

Thanks again to everyone who came out. I hope everyone had a great time.
