Game Recap 03-31-2012

This home-made scenario involved an Andromedan attempt to recover or destroy a Satellite Ship which had been previously captured by the ISC and towed back to a Battlestation for safekeeping and study. The Andromedans (played by Nick and Gren) had an Intruder (with a Cobra, a Terminator, and an Eel) and a Conquistador (with a Cobra). The ISC players (myself, Geoff, and James) had a Battlestation (with 12 Fighters), Strike Cruiser, Destroyer, Frigate, and a Monitor.

The ISC ships began stationary, guarding the base which lay just a few hexes behind. The Anromedans began moving speed 31, except one Cobra moving at speed ten behind. As soon as the Andromedans closed to range 15, the ISC began pummeling them with PPDs, hitting the Intruder. As the range lessened, more PPDs were applied, as well as several Plasma Torpedoes. Just before the Plasma Torpedoes struck, the Andromedan motherships used their Displacement Devices to transport themselves past the ISC front lines to arrive within about eight hexes of the station. The Fighters from the ISC station began to attack them, while the DD and SC launched torpedoes and a few phaser-1s. The Intruder's PA panels were soon overwhelmed.

The BATS unloaded its phaser-4s and other weapons on the COQ, along with torpedoes from the fighters. The combined attack completely destroyed the COQ. The INT opened up on the station, devestating its facing shield and causing a lot of hull damage inside, as well as removing a few phasers. The INT, now alone and very close to the BS, transported four boarding parties onto the captured ship inside the ISC BATS, who immediately began their attempts to destroy the ship. The ISC base moved boarding parties onto the captured ship to counter.

The Andromedan INT, after soaking up another round of heavy fire, used it DisDev to remove itself from harm and away from the battle. After three turns, the boarding party completed their suicide mission to destroy the ISC's prize. The remaining Andromedan ships withdrew.

The battle was another opportunity for us to become more familiar with the rules surrounding the Andromedans. It was definitely a learning experience for everyone. Nick and Gren did well. They took a hell of a pounding, and still managed to destroy the captured ship and escape with one mothership intact (though it was only three SSD boxes away from being crippled). The ISC players made good use of the PPDs and Plasma Torpedoes to weaken the attackers. Most of the action took place in only 15 impulses of the first turn!

We have yet to gain a firm grasp of perferable tactics when using the Andromedans, but as we become more familar with them, we are learning their advantages and shortcomings. We will be taking a break from the Andromedans for a while, but will come back to revisit them later.
