Game Recap 9-8-2012

Since we only had three players on Saturday, we decided to postpone playing the Kaufman Retrograde. Instead, we were able to play two other scenarios:

1. Gorn vs. ISC at Gas Giant
This scenario puts a group of 3 Gorn Light Cruisers against a group of 3 ISC Destroyers that stumble upon each other during training exercises. The ships are even point values (or so we thought; see explanation below). Nick played the Gorn while Spencer and I played the ISC.
The Gorn ships entered the map and slowed to speed 6. The ISC ships sped up to 25 and began circumventing the Gas Giant in the middle of the map. All ships began powering up weapons. On the second turn, the Gorn used accelerated arming to produce several Type-F Plasma Torpedoes, which were launched at two of the ISC DDs. The ISC chewed them down with phaser fire. The Gorn meanwhile launched several shuttles to support their ships.
The Gorn slowed to speed 4. The ISC also slowed as the range decreased, and began launching their own shuttles. The Gorn shotgun-fired their Plasma torpedoes, producing nine of them--three targeted at each ISC ship. The ISC finally finished arming their Plasma-Fs and maneuvered to good firing positions. The Gorn supported their torpedo strikes with phaser fire to weaken shields. The ISC pummeled the Gorn Type-Fs with phaser fire to reduce a few of them, but the majority of the torpedoes hit their targets largely unaffected. The lead ISC DD (me) closed to 1-hex range of the lead Gorn CL after taking three torpedo hits on different shields, and launched three Type-Fs plasma torpedoes, which tore down the CLs front shield and crippled the ship, taking out its weapons. During the same impulse, the remaining Gorn torpedoes struck their targets. One of the trailing ISC DDs was all-but-destroyed, leaving only a couple boxes intact.
At this point, the ISC ships withdrew, knowing that they were overmatched by the Gorn Plasma-S weapons. While calculating the victory points, it was discovered that an error had been made regarding the configuration of the Gorn CLs--the Plasma-S torpedoes they were carrying should have been Type-G. Adjusting the victory points accordingly, the battle was a draw. The ISC ships *were* outclassed by the Gorn ships. But, considering the point value difference, they still managed to acquit themselves well.

2. SG7.0- The Pirates Go For Big Game
The second scenario we played involved a Neo-Tholian NCA chasing an Orion CR. Unwittingly, the NCA finds itself facing not one, but *three* CRs. Nick played the Neo-Tholian ship, while Spencer and I played the Orions.
The scenario begins with the NCA chasing the first CR (me), with two additional Orion CRs entering from adjacent map corners to support their comrade. The two new Orion CRs raced at speed 14 to assist their fellow. The first CR slowed to the same speed, but continued to move away from the pursuing ship until he could perform an HET and group with the other Orions. All Orions ships doubled one of their warp engines to produce extra power. The NCA used its Web Caster to limit the movement options of the Orion ships. This worked well, creating tactical problems for the Orions, who had to maneuver around the two webs. Meanwhile, the NCA wove itself in and around the web in order to restrict firing options for the Orions. The Orions cleared the two webs and began circling around. The NCA threw up a third web. However, the first two webs expired and dissipated. All the Orion ships used HETs to immediately turn and race up to the NCA. The lead ship (me) closed to range-0, with the other ships one or two hexes behind. All three CRs opened up with a *massive* phaser strike--a combined total of 21 Phaser-1s. The damage total was 124 points, which tore down the rear shield of the NCA and destroyed the ship. The resulting explosion crippled the lead CR and dealt some damage to the next-nearest one.
This scenario was a strategic challenge for the Neo-Tholian ship. Using the Web Caster against three targets is tricky. Unfortunately, Nick was not able to isolate the Orions ships, which would be relatively easy prey for the NCA individually.
