Shared Work Space, Ruby on Rails Workshops, Events, Opportunities and other Announcements

JDI Montgomery County members you may be getting all of our attention pretty soon.  Did you know that you were a part of network of meetup groups have swelled to almost 1900+ members.  Entreprenuers, startups, developers, creatives and others have joined and participated in our various events.

So many members with varied interests, goals and aspirations.  We want to do more to support you better.  We are becoming more organized and focused.  New relationships are being established via sponsorship, partnerships and alliances.

Shared Work Space (Take the Survey)

This is past the idea stage now.  To support our goals, a project has been initiated to explore establishing a 24 hour, mixed use/shared work space to host daily events, workshops, classes and promote collaboration.  Entrepreneurs, start-ups, developers, creatives - whoever, this is your new home.  It will also act as a hub for other meetup groups to congregate.  This would be a facility similar to other shared work spaces such as The Hub and General Assembly.  We would also adopt many of the features, programming, amenities, and other attributes of those two organizations, but we would also add our own signature as well.

We are going to be offering more than just a desk. think workshops, conferences, courses - all as separate add-ons or in bundles. To keep costs low, there will be many options on how you pay, including unique incentives.  To offer near maximum availability to all members, we are exploring to leverage technology and incentives to help with load balancing availability of desks, meeting rooms and other amenities.

We have already established vital relationships with established shared work space organizations and local jurisdictions who are very interested in supporting our initiatives as partners or other roles.  Meetings are ongoing.  Potential sites have been identified throughout the DC/MD/VA metro area.  An interim solution is being explored as well, including a pilot program.

If you are intersted in a great opportunity like this, please help us by taking a 6 question survey with the link below.

Build Your First Ruby on Rails Application (5 Session Course)

No need waiting for the shared work space opportunity to arrive.  Let's get started on part of our initiative right now with actual courses executed by real instructors.  We will be offering real course level workshop starting next month.  One of them will be a Ruby on Rails multi-session workshop that will take developers and others who are new to Ruby and Rails from the beginning to actually building your first web app.  We have tentatively secured the help of an instructor who happens to be the organizer of the largest Ruby on rails meetup group in the world to offer this course to our members in 5 sessions.  Finally, a hands on workshop with Ruby on Rails.  If that is not exciting, we are putting a spin on how to support you during the session and to keep the learning going afterwards.  More on this and details later.

Real WordPress, JavaScript/HTML5, appMobi, PhoneGap, Lean Startup, marketing, Photoshop and other courses will be available real soon.  Please let us know by email or commenting in the discussion board of your interests in the above and other topics you would like to see covered.

World Bank: Development Data Challenge (Ideation Event)

Friday, June 1, 2012 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM (ET)Washington, DC

Are you interested in international development? Have questions about open financial data? Have ideas on how to better use development data?

Please join World Bank Finances, the Open Aid Register, Development Gateway, Open Corporates, AidInfo, Connect4Climate, and the International Center for Journalists for an afternoon of ideation, inspiration, and learning to help unleash the untapped potential of open financial/spending data for development impact!

Open financial data embodies the intersection of many global trends- including greater demand for transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement. The availability of data and rapid evolution of new technologies to support these trends provides an opportunity to make significant progress towards greater innovation and large scale public participation in development processes. Through the Development Data Challenge (DDC) ideation event on June 1, we are seeking to begin sourcing solutions through a collaborative brainstorming process involving civil society, open data practitioners & enthusiasts, data owners, and technologists.

Ideation themes/categories to include*:

  • Aid Effectiveness
  • Assurance & Anti-Corruption
  • Citizen Engagement/Community
  • Connectivity/Big Data
  • Procurement/Contracts
  • Mobile & Web Applications
  • Data Journalism
  • Design/Data Visualization

*Selected ideas to be presented to Random Hacks of Kindness for development on June 2-3, 2012. Ideas to be selected on the basis of creativity, innovation, potential impact, collaboration, feasibility/implementation plan.

Join us to learn more about open financial data and its current uses, brainstorm with others on important development issues, and potentially be a part of a development solution! Refreshments, snacks, and light reception to be provided.
