Summer Stoic School / Scuola Estiva di Stoicismo

[Sponsored in part by the Department of Philosophy, the City College of New York]

[Update! Download the handbook for the School here! / Aggiornamento! Scarica il manuale per la Scuola qui!]

Spend three days in Rome studying ancient and modern Stoicism! Join Massimo and a small group of prokoptontes (students of Stoicism) to dig into Epictetus' Manual, learn about practical Stoicism and how to apply it to your life. While there, walk through the Roman Fori or visit the National Roman Museum, and of course enjoy traditional Roman cuisine and local wines (don't worry, we won't accuse you of being a Epicurean...)! The course is in English, but accommodations will be made for Italian students.

    Ciao Massimo,
quick question about the books: are we required to work them through before the school to be prepared and have discussion points or will that spoil all the fun?
Also: Are we going to touch the Discourses as well or just the Enchiridion?
I'm looking forward to the course.
    Cheers - Herman

    • Massimo

Herman, sorry for seeing this a bit late. As I answered you via email (but others may be interested), it would be helpful to at least look at the books before coming to the School. And yes, we'll be covering parts of the Discourses as highlighted in How To Be a Stoic.

This is really, really cool. I had been thinking of joining a US based course/camp, but Europe is much more convenient, living in Denmark. Unfortunately, I will not be able to join this year.
I have one request: In case of follow-up 2018 and onwards would you please consider placing the course in May/June or Sept/Oct? - weather is still pleasant in Rome :) July is usually annual leave for Northern/Central Europe and August is a you know "Ferragosto" in Southern Europe.
Many thanks for this brilliant iniative!

    1 · March 8

    • Massimo

Roberto, I will definitely try to do it again next year. The dates will depend on a number of things, including my travel schedule, but yes, I'll keep your suggestion in mind!

      March 10

  • Chandra H.

Hello, two of us would like to join the event at Rome but cannot find information on how to join/register.

Thank you in advance for help!

    March 9

    • Massimo

Chandra, you can rsvp on this very page. To do so, you will have to pay the fee of $150 per person, which goes toward covering the expenses to rent the meeting Rome in Rome.

  • Jennifer W.

Wow, this sounds fantas- I mean, certainly like a preferred indifferent! ;-) I can't come to Rome in July but in case you're doing it again in 2018, I would love to be there.

    2 · March 8

    • Massimo

Jennifer, I'm planning to do it every year, Fate permitting...
