Women's Self Defense Workshop
3-hour workshop for women on Street Smart Safety & Self-Defense. No experience required for this training. Wear loose fitting clothing. We will be in a karate dojo so no shoes are allowed on the training floor. (we will be barefoot) This training will have 3 main areas: 1. Awareness - This is the most important element of Street Smarts. And ideally this part will keep you from ever needing parts 2 & 3 2. Evasion - You're spidey senses are tingling. Something doesn't feel right. Now is the time to take action to prevent an encounter. Here's what you do. 3. Escape - This is what you do if you need to get physical in order to save your skin. You will learn how to strike, vital target areas no matter what size the attacker, how to escape from grabs and holds, how to use common objects as weapons and much more. The ultimate goal is to 'escape' so you can get away from any harm to a safe secure location. The goal is not to be the next female Jackie Chan and take out a room full of bad guys. In case you are wondering about the instructor (me), here's some of my Bio: I hold black belt rank in two systems of karate, Seibukan Shorin Ryu and Wado Ryu. And also in Niseido JuJitsu. I am also a long time student of Yamanni Ryu Kobudo (traditional Okinawan weapons) I was once ranked #4 fighter in the S.E. Light-Heavyweight Black Belt division. I have experience in Filipino stick fighting, ground fighting, full contact karate, Okinawan Kobudo, small circle jujitsu and more. In my years of training I have done full speed defense against real knives, sticks, baseball bats, clubs and guns. Also against bear hugs, choking, hair grabs, wresting holds and every kind of hit and kick. And also defense against multiple attackers. But most important... I am a good instructor. I have taught Karate as an Adjunct Professor of Physical Education at Florida Atlantic University. And I taught women's self defense while at the University of Florida. What I will be sharing with you is practical, proven, no-nonsense and easy to learn. And I'm brutally honest about what you will be able to do and not do. You are trusting me as your teacher on a topic that involves your everyday safety. So I won't bullshit you to make me look good. I look forward to seeing you in class. Sensei Craig

    What we're about

    Public Group

This Meetup was started because some of my women friends had become concerned for their personal safety after a series of attacks in the Mission. They no longer felt safe going out to their favorite hang outs.

I had taught women's self-defense classes before and asked if they would be interested. Obviously they said yes.

We will focus on 3 main areas of self-defense: awareness, evasion and escape. Where escape is the worst case-scenario in which you have to physically engage an attacker.

There will be 2-3 hour workshops in how to stay safe in the streets of San Francisco (or anywhere else). No experience or athletic ability is required.

Though this group is focused on self-defense and safety for women, men are welcome to attend and participate.

As the group grows we will have some social functions too.
