January's brunch was so much fun, we're back at Court Tree Gallery in February! This time, get ready to let the good times roll as we kick off Mardi Gras with a special menu, beads, and a prize for whoever gets the baby in the King Cake! FEBRUARY'S EXHIBITION: in which we all kiss something secretly Their first collaboration began twenty years ago, when visual artist Maria Mercedes Martinez put a cigar box with ten little drawings outside poet Denver Butson’s apartment door (the two lived next to each other on the top floor of a Brooklyn Heights apartment building). Butson took the little drawings and paired them with words — some from previous poems, some randomly chosen from notebooks, some written just for the drawings themselves — and added ten new sets of words on the same-sized pieces of paper and then returned the cigar box to the front of Martinez’s door. This back-and-forth continued for a few weeks, each time with the recipient responding to the ten new pieces and then adding ten additional pieces to the box. When they finished they had dozens of paired drawings/poems, which they called the cigar box project, a project which has been exhibited a few times since then, and always returned soon after to its original cigar box. in which we all kiss something secretly is the third collaboration of these friends and artists over the past twenty years. https://bit.ly/2DT8rIJ MARDI GRAS MENU Course 1: Savory cheese beignets, honey, sage Course 2: Muffaletta salad Course 3: Shrimp & grits, andouille, fried egg Course 4: King cake (get the baby, win a free brunch!) By serving a small number of guests in an intimate setting, we're able to use ingredients that we're proud of, with a focus on seasonality. We use local, sustainably produced dairy and produce when available. Brooklyn is home to a number of specialty butchers, bakeries, fish & cheese mongers, and other artisanal producers. We support these small businesses whenever possible. WHO'S COOKING THIS MONTH? Becky did not grow up clinging to her mother's apron strings or learning family recipes from my grandmother in the kitchen. In fact, her parents used to joke that she better marry a man who could cook so that she wouldn't starve! Culinary school wasn't her destiny - film school was. And then lo and behold, her first job out of college was working for Martha Stewart's TV show. And she taught Becky how to cook. From Martha Stewart's own kitchen to the kitchens she traveled to around the world, Becky had a front row seat to watching some of our generation's brightest culinary minds at work - chefs like Grant Achatz, Daniel Boulud, David Chang, and Dan Barber. After 6 years with Martha's company, she continued her education at ABC's The Chew for the run of the show, while taking classes at the CIA and ICE to fill in the gaps. Becky is excited to share all of the delicious things she learned with the meetup community and meet some amazing people along the way! Happy brunching!
