At Sunday School we provide intimate classes on all aspects of wine. All classes are accessible, informative and fun!
They are run by Mallory, a wine geek in the making and the manager of 1856 Bottleshop & Bar, and Martin, who is a journalist, wine columnist for the Portland Mercury and sometimes wine judge.
Our classes are for those who want to expand their knowledge of wine in an intimate and informal setting. It's less a lecture and more a pedagogic drinking session, where the wines themselves are the stars of the class. We also provide materials, such as class notes and hand-drawn maps, which can be taken home for reference.
This is Sunday School’s classic class on all things bubbly. You’ll learn where the bubbles actually come from, the distinctions between the different types of sparkling (Cava, Prosecco, Pet Nat etc.) and why Champagne makers were once forced to wear armor in the cellar.
We’ll also debunk a few myths about Dom Perignon and see how a French widow revolutionized Champagne making. Our tasting flight of five wines will get you up to speed on all the styles of fizz, including one using a method from ancient times, and you’ll leave knowing how to shop for and buy the bubbly that suits you best.
Flight of sparkling wine and light snacks included.
Please note: We cannot reserve your seat in the class until after you've purchased a ticket. Thank you!
