What we're about

I've set this group up for those who enjoy walking along the canal and would like to do so in the company of others.

The walk that I have devised is a direct response to my mobility issues due to having ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and is therefore suitable for anyone who has to deal with similar problems - or anyone who just feels like an easygoing walk along the canal.

It's a slow walk, and can be a time to reflect, listen and discuss, or to simply stroll along the canal in companionable silences.

New walkers are always welcome.

The starting point is near to Waitrose car park at midday every Sunday, start time for the walk is 12.30 PM. There are 4 routes which end at the same next to Waitrose starting point, or can finish with a wander around town for those who want to. This makes sure that anyone who is struggling for any reason (or who simply doesn't want to do one of the longer walks) always has an "opt-out" route.

The first walk is approximately 1000 steps, the next 2 variations are approximately 2000 and 4000 steps and the last is approximately 6000 steps. (Note: I will add a more accurate step count once I've done the walks again, these are memory based estimates). There's even a quick shortcut route if you'd prefer to head straight to the canal side Upper Lock Cafe.

There are multiple benches and seating places along the walks and folk are encouraged to stop, sit down and chat at regular intervals.

Of course, I've set this up *JUST* in time for the autumn and winter weather to hit, so...umbrellas and warm clothes might be a good idea? Also: It's probably a good idea to bring something to sit down on (a plastic bag or whatnot) in case benches are wet.

Hope to see you there, and if you need any assistance, please say so.

The walk is entirely free, because, you know - it's just a walk.

I'm aiming to set this up in such a way that I don't need to attend every walk as I may need to rest instead.

Note; In accordance with Meetup's policies, we are obliged to state that everyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. So, that's that stated.

This a dog friendly walk provided dogs are well behaved.

Those wishing to eat at the Upper Lock Cafe should be aware that the kitchen closes at 2PM and after that only cakes are served and the cafe closes at 3PM.

Sunday Stroud Canal Walk

Waitrose Stroud

This is a regular stroll along the canal which starts at the bench near to Waitrose. To get to the bench: As you are standing in front of and facing the entrance to Waitrose, turn right and take the stairs or ramp down to the zebra crossing. Cross the crossing (remember the Green Cross Code, kids!! Ha.) and stop at the first bench. The official walking start time is 12.30, but folk can show up from 12.00 onwards. This is a slow walk with multiple options for length and duration, specifically designed as a result of dealing with my CFS/ME and therefore has lots of stopping points to rest, sit down and chat and so forth. (Again - I will post about the various route options, with photos, shortly) - there's even a "quick shortcut route" if you just want to get straight to the cafe on the canal. The endpoints are either a return to the starting point or a wander around town. This walk is entirely free, because, you know - it's just a walk. Everyone is welcome and your personal walk can be anything from a 10 minute stroll to an hour or more, or various options in between.
