13 Crossings (Upper and Lower Makamakaole Stream) This hike is rated easy to moderate due to length and low elevation change. There are slippery rocks when crossing the stream. This is an in and out type hike. This hike is about 3 miles round trip and will take around 3 hours, depending on our pace and how long we lounge at the pools. The hike begins at the Makamakaole Stream bridge. We will first go downstream a little ways to admire the view where the stream falls in large steps down to the ocean, then make our way back up to the bridge and head upstream. We will make our way along the stream, crossing and re-crossing the stream, passing by ancient Hawaiian stone walls, and through bamboo and native forest. At the fork, we will continue right to the waterfalls. Pool lounging is on the agenda at this time. Climb up the rope above each waterfall at your own risk! The trail is muddy. Each stream crossing has slippery rocks. The trail is under heavy jungle canopy. It may rain. If the rain is heavy, we will cancel due to the risk of flash flooding. I will give a last minute weather update the evening before the hike. Mosquito repellent recommended. Wear shoes/sandals that you don’t mind getting wet and filthy! We will meet at 9am at the Maui Lani Safeway parking lot, on the side nearest Kaahumanu Avenue. Look for the guy in the red shirt. We will leave the parking lot at 9:15am, and carpool to the trailhead, about a 20 minute drive. There is limited parking at the trailhead. I have room for 3 people in my car.
