This group is for anyone interested in helping to make Albany and the surrounding areas more sustainable. The secondary objective is to have FUN and socialize with like-minded individuals. Possible meetups include: neighborhood cleanups, gardening, planting trees/bulbs, environmental lobbying, trail and river clean-ups, community garden planning, protesting, environmental education, beekeeping, convincing restaurants and businesses to buy and sell locally, graffiti removal/mural painting, movie nights, canning classes, invasive plant removal, bike refurbishing/tune-ups, electronics recycling, camping, "green drinks" discussions, discouraging pesticide use in parks, neighborhood beautification, volunteer weatherization projects, and more!
The first event would probably be a get-together at a cafe to talk about future meetups.
I (almost!) have a BS in Environmental Studies, so I have some abilities to bring to the table. If anyone else has any skills or ideas that may be useful to the group, please send me a message or post on the message board.
Everyone is welcome to join! Looking forward to transforming Albany into a more sustainable and environmentally conscious community with you!
Join us for an Earth Day Celebration which focuses on Practical Actions You Can Take to Heal Our Planet. There will be several presentations on topics such as (Wishful) Recycling, Reducing Carbon Emissions through Composting, and Renewable Energy Options for Everyone- Heating/Cooling, and Solar options for renters and homeowners! There will also be environmental exhibits and information tables from various sustainability/environmental groups.
We will have tablespace at this event! Everyone can meet at the table ~ 5PM to meet with others from the group.I will be running the table, so stop by to say hi :)
See the facebook event for more info:
Zero Waste Capital District is volunteering to collect water jugs and water cups during the Work Force Challenge! Normally, these items would get thrown away, but Zero Waste is working to recycle and/or compost them. They are also setting a compost station in the plaza for runners to compost their food scraps. We need volunteers to:
1) Collect the water jugs and cups from water stations
2) Run the Zero Waste table in the plaza, which involves giving out fliers, signing people up for the group, and collection donations.
The race starts at 6:25 PM, but volunteers should be there around 5 PM. Let me know if you are seriously interested!
Let's do some sustainable shopping at the farmer's market! Bring your reusable shopping bags. This market is one of the best in the area with a large variety of produce, prepared foods, and handmade goods! The market will be outside by the waterfront by then (starting May 5th), so we can celebrate the warmer weather as well. If anyone wants to carpool from Albany, we can meet and drive over together.
