From Docker? to Kubernetes!
Details
There is a LOT of talk about containerization today, and about Docker in particular. At least in the Microsoft world. The rest of the world has been using it for quite a while, but seeing that it is mostly Linux based, it has had some problems getting traction with Microsoft developers. But that is about to change.
The technology raises a lot of questions though. What is it? Why is it awesome? How do I get started? How can it help me? Is it just for huge companies like Netflix? Is there any reason to use it if you aren’t running a 100 node cluster? Will it blend?
All of them valid questions when you are getting started, but once you get over the initial “what is it?”, you quickly get into “that is really cool” and “why hasn’t anyone told me about this before”. And you realize that there are a lot of reasons to go further and learn more.
In this talk you will get an introduction to Docker, what it is and what it does, and then a walkthrough of how to get started with it. You will get to see the tools you need, the initial commands you need to know, as well as some demos showing some of the cool things you can easily do with Docker. Taking you from “what is it?” to “I consider putting all my things in containers” in an hour-ish.
And now that you know your Docker. We’ll carry on and have a look at where we go from here. And since all the cool kids are talking about Kubernetes and container orchestrators, and how they are like magic pixie dust to your applications, it’s probably a good place to start looking. And honestly, being able to create solutions that are automatically load balanced, self-healing and even provides seamless rolling updates that allow you to release new versions with zero downtime, sounds pretty sweet. And knowing you, you probably want some of that too!
Honestly though, it isn’t magic, and It won’t “just work”! It can seem pretty close to magic though, but as long as you understand how it works, you can use it to bring your applications hosting to the next level. With the operative words being “understand it”… Unless you know what you are doing, it can’t really help you…but that’s where this talk comes in!
In this talk, we will start out by looking at how you can set up your local development environment to run Kubernetes based applications. After that, we will look at the architectural building blocks that make up Kubernetes , and then go on to look at some of the great features that Kubernetes give you, and how you can take advantage of them in your projects.
Most Kubernetes talks tend to focus on the DevOps side of things. And even if that’s where Kubernetes has the most impact, there are still quite a few things for us developers to understand before we can build applications that can be allowed in to the Kubernetes world.
Speaker: Chris Klug
We start with some food and at 18:00 the talk begins. Talk will be 1+ 1 hour with a break in between.
