About us
The Sydney Open Forum is a bastion of free speech since 1971. We meet on 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of the month at 6:00 pm and 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month at 4:00 pm. Sessions usually end after two hours. Viewing and discussion of a movie or documentary sometimes takes 30 mins to an hour longer.
We promote lively and informed discussions about topical issues. We welcome all opinions without fear or favour, but mutual respect in the equality of each other's rights is essential for the exercise of free speech and equal responsibilities to work. Our approximately 2000 speakers have ranged across a vast range of opinions, causes, ideologies, and areas of knowledge.
In 2023 Open Forum continued at a new venue - Henry George House at 122 Little Eveleigh Street in Redfern, consistent with the principles of the venue's namesake who wrote:
"Therefore, I will take nothing for granted. Accepted theories will be tested; established facts will be freshly questioned. I will not shrink from any conclusion, but promise to follow the truth wherever it may lead.
What the outcome proves to be is not our affair. If the conclusions we reach run counter to our prejudices, let us not flinch. If they challenge institutions that have long been regarded as wise and natural, let us not turn back."
Our format has since changed. Other than speakers, we have open discussions on topical issues, viewing documentaries and movies relevant to the exercise of democracy and the pursuit of truth.

View & Discuss: Gareth Evans: AUKUS 'Misconceived from the Onset."
HENRY GEORGE HOUSE, 122 Little Eveleighy St Redfern, Sydney, AUAUKUS has been sold as a strategic masterstroke, a technological leap, and a necessary hedge against an uncertain region. But former Foreign Minister Gareth Evans—one of Australia’s most experienced voices in diplomacy, nuclear policy, and regional security—argues the opposite: that AUKUS was “misconceived from the onset.”
This Sydney Open Forum session invites you to watch and unpack Evans’ critique together, exploring what his argument means for Australia’s sovereignty, diplomacy, and long‑term security posture.### 🌏 What we’ll explore
Evans’ analysis raises sharp questions that cut across party lines and strategic orthodoxies:
- Does AUKUS actually enhance Australia’s security—or entangle us in great‑power rivalry?
- What are the diplomatic costs for Australia’s relationships in Southeast Asia and the Pacific?
- Is nuclear‑powered submarine capability worth the financial, technological, and strategic risks?
- What alternatives exist for a defence posture that is independent, credible, and regionally constructive?
Whether you agree with Evans or not, his critique is a rare example of clear, historically grounded strategic thinking in a debate often dominated by slogans.
