What we’re about
Socrates Cafe is a philosophy discussion group that is open to absolutely everyone. It's held in a casual cafe environment and we encourage everyone to join in - but there's no obligation to do so. We're bringing philosophy back to the people!

GETTING THERE: TBA
FINDING US: TBA
TOPIC: Everyone is welcome to suggest a topic - just write it down on the list when you arrive. Brevity is required - you must limit your topic to a maximum of ten words, and please consider that one-word topics can make for excellent conversation. Please also try to leave assumptions out of the question (eg, do not ask "why do we think..." as it presumes that we all think the same way - which is highly unlikely!).
FOOD & DRINK: TBA
Please do remember to keep your RSVP accurate - it helps me plan properly so you have a good time!
Hope to see & hear from you.Not open
- Socrates Cafe - Moderated DiscussionRose of Australia, Erskineville, NS
This meeting will be a moderated discussion (with no formal talk at the start).
We'll choose the topic together on the night and you're invited to participate (or to sit back and enjoy the conversation, if that's your preference). No homework or prior reading is necessary - just come prepared to be open-minded.
Topic selection - you are requested to limit topic suggestions to 12 words or fewer. We'll start selecting the topic on the night around 6:45pm, so please come on time if you want a say in what we're going to discuss.
After the discussion, you're invited to join us for dinner at around 8:30pm. If you need to eat earlier, please consider doing so before the event (or downstairs) so as to minimise any disruptions to our event and other attendees. Here is the link to their food menu.
When ordering food or drinks, please advise staff that you are part of Socrates Cafe upstairs (even if you consume your order downstairs). This will help the venue get an idea of how much business we are bringing them which may help us with
(a) keeping the venue on an ongoing basis and (b) with keeping venue costs down.
- Erskineville train station is less than 100m away.
- Erskineville Rd bus stops 35T3, 47T2 and 355 are within 200m.
- Street parking should be readily available within reasonable distance.
If you could do with a lift home, please either post a request on the website or let me know on the night and I'll make an announcement - our members come from all over Sydney, so someone may well be able to assist.
Looking forward to seeing you there! And please do RSVP if you are coming, and change your RSVP if you decide not to come - it is helpful to ensure we can line up the right number of facilitators to ensure YOU have a good night. Also, event capacity will be limited by the number of facilitators we will have on the night.
