What we're about

What:
To play some knock about volleyball in the park on Sunday afternoons. No fixed teams, people just show up and join in where the gaps are. The main aim is fun for all.

Who:
Anyone who wants to run around madly chasing a ball in the park on Sundays. Don't need to be good, enthusiasm is all that's required.

Where:
Sydney Park in St. Peters. I've bought a net and a couple of balls and scouted a good spot in the park; near the cafe by the old chimney stacks. Basically, if you come in to the park from the King Street/Princess Highway car park you'll pass the kids playground. From there you should see us set up on the falt space just there.

When:
Sunday afternoons. 2.00pm onwards.

How Much:
Nothing. I've bought some toys, now I need other kids to play with.

Rules:
Respect for everyone. Having fun. Standard Court Volleyball rules. (OK, beach players, I can bend a bit on that last one.)

Volleyball for experienced players

Hello. If you are free this Saturday, why not join us to play some volleyball? This event is open ONLY to experienced players. This means that you have played more than 100 games and know the basic rules. If you are not sure, you are welcome to try us out one time to see. Cost: $0 (free) if you RSVP and are at the meeting spot at starting time; $1 per person if you RSVP and arrive after starting time; $5 per person if you are not on the RSVP list. Please RSVP (note the RSVP closing time). RSVP "GOING" VERSUS "WAITLIST": Please note that if you RSVP and end up on the "Waitlist" then you do NOT have a spot unless your name appears in the "Going" list. If your name is not on the "Going" list, you may not be allowed to play, depending on how many people we have on the day. If you are bringing a friend with you who is NOT on Meetup, you must add them as +1 to your own RSVP. SHOWING UP ON TIME: Note: The first 12 people to arrive and/or whoever is at the meeting spot on starting time, will get to play 3 games in a row before anyone else plays (e.g. late people). If we have 2 nets, then the late comers can play as soon as they set up the 2nd net. NUMBER OF PLAYERS: Depending on the number of players, we may end up playing 6 vs 6, 5 vs 5, 4 vs 4 or even 3 vs 3. NO SHOWS: If you are on the "Going" list and can no longer make it, you MUST change your RSVP to "No" to free up your spot for others. If you are listed as "Going" and do not show up, this is a "NO SHOW". If you repeatedly do No Shows (e.g. 2 or more times), next time there is someone on the Waitlist, your spot will be given away. [You must finalise your RSVP by 10am on the day of the game, to give those on the waitlist a chance to see this and plan their day.] We play in the large flat open area known as The Green. This is near the Kiosk/Cafe and children's playground. It takes a few people to set up the net and so we will wait until we have enough people at the park to help set up the net. See you at the park!

Play Volleyball (beginners welcome)

Hi All, If you are free this Sunday, why not join us to play some volleyball? This event is open to all experience levels: 1st timers, beginners, intermediate, advanced. Cost: $0 (free) if you RSVP and are at the meeting spot at starting time; $1 per person if you RSVP and arrive after starting time; $5 per person if you're not on the RSVP list. Please RSVP (note the RSVP closing time). We play in the large flat open area known as The Green. This is near the Kiosk/Cafe and children's playground. The following links should help: Google Maps: https://www.google.com/maps/@-33.9088694,151.1831339,226m/data=!3m1!1e3 Nearmap photo: https://www.meetup.com/Sydney-Volleyball-in-the-Park/photos/12360902/#[masked] If you are there on time and cannot see the net, don't worry. It takes a few people to set up the net and so we wait until we have enough people at the park to help set up the net. Notes: 1. We normally play in teams of 6 vs 6. 2. If we have more than 12 players, we will have rotations (substitutions). 3. If we have more than 16 players, we will make extra teams. 4. If we have more than 21 players and more than one net, we will divide the people equally amongst the nets. 5. There will be times where we will have mixed-play. This means that all playing levels, from beginners to intermediate and advanced will play together, in the same teams and against each other. This allows the less experienced players to learn from the more experienced players. Advanced players must not serve or spike too hard towards beginners. 6. There will be times where we will have experience-based play. This means that we will separate players/teams/games into more experienced and less experienced. To help speed up this process and have more playing time, organisers may help with team selection. Conditions of play: 1. Please be safe and respectful to every one at the park (meetup attendees and general public at the park). 2. Please be aware that there are a few holes in the grass area where we play. When we set-up the net, we do generally try to avoid these, but cannot guarantee to avoid them all. 3. Please be aware that often dogs run into the area we play. After all, many dogs do like chasing balls. If this happens, we must stop playing immediately to avoid injuring ourselves or the animal. If you see a dog approach or enter our playing area, call out "DOG!". Whoever is nearest to the ball, when you hear someone shout "DOG!" please catch the ball. Don't worry about the point, as we will replay the service. 4. When going to hit a ball very close to the net, please make sure not to touch the net or cross over (or under) the net, as there may be another player there and you could injure yourself, or the other player. 5. More experienced players: when you are playing against less experienced players, please reduce the strength of your serves and spikes. This will give a better chance to the less experienced players to hit the ball and also avoid potential injury. You can practice your harder sets and spikes in the advanced game, in the second half of the day, or join us on Saturdays, when it is Advanced-only. 6. If you RSVP and do not show up, you will be marked as a "No-Show". Similarly, if you RSVP and do not pay (if payment is required), you will also be marked as a "No-Show". If you have multiple "No-Shows" and we have too many players, priority will be given to those who don't have any "No-shows" and as such, you may not be allowed to play. 7. If you have any questions, please ask. See you at the park!
