Abhidhamma Retreat

Details

Thabarwa will be hosting a live stream of Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi's yearly Abhiddamma Study Retreat at our beautiful meditation center in Lake Elsinor

"Bhante will be exploring the Buddha's teachings of dependent origination (paticca-samuppada), the principle that all conditioned things arise in dependence on conditions. Dependent origination specifically traces the chain of conditions that binds us to samsara, the cycle of repeated birth and death, thereby showing us what we must do to attain liberation. At the retreat Bhante will be discussing complementary points of view: from the perspective of the suttas, and from the more technical Abhidhamma perspective.

The retreat will begin Friday afternoon August 30th and continue through 9 am on Tuesday September 3rd. The retreat will include live stream lectures and discussion periods, question and answer sessions, and five periods of meditation each day. Prior attendance of earlier retreats is not required to register for this retreat.

Each year since 2013, Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi has been holding a Labor Day weekend retreat on the Abhidhamma, the Buddhist philosophical psychology. At this year’s Abhidhamma retreat he will be exploring the Buddha’s teaching of dependent origination (paticca-samuppada), the principle that all conditioned things arise in dependence on conditions. Dependent origination specifically traces the chain of conditions that binds us to samsara, the cycle of repeated birth and death, thereby showing us what we must do to attain liberation. At the retreat Bhante will be discussing dependent origination from two complementary points of view: from the perspective of the suttas, and from the unique more technical Abhidhamma perspective.
We will first examine a selection of suttas from the Nidana-samyutta, the “connected discourses on the chain of conditions.” Thereafter we will explore the 24 conditions that the Abhidhamma system applies to its analysis of dependent origination. This part of the retreat, based on the Visuddhimagga (Path of Purification), chapter 17, will give us a detailed, microscopic understanding of this central Buddhist principle.
It is recommended that students obtain copies of A Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma and The Path of Purification.
Free versions of both books are available by clicking on the text above .
Paper copies may be purchased from Pariyatti.org.
A selection of relevant suttas will be sent out later. Those who wish to explore the subject in detail should study chapter 17 of the Visuddhimagga and the first part of chapter 8 of the Comprehensive Manual. If these appear too difficult to study on one’s own, don’t despair. Bhante will be treating them in a clear and comprehensible manner.
The retreat will begin on Friday afternoon, August 30th, and continue through Tuesday, September 3rd. The retreat will include lectures and discussion periods, question and answer sessions, and five periods of meditation each day. Prior attendance at the earlier retreats is not required to register for this retreat. The schedule and syllabus for the retreat will be posted by mid-July.
