Subject: [Tacoma-Mountaineer-Singles] TacMTNR Singles:  free Sunday dinner, upcoming bike ride info

Greetings, all:

Jim Harvey here, Tacoma Mountaineer Singles aka TMS bike ride leader, with a few upcoming events.

First: this coming Sunday afternoon, June 16, 1:00pm, TMS’ Fearless Leader Karen Turner hosts a free pizza dinner at Katie Downs restaurant, on the shore of Commencement Bay in Ruston (about 1/4 mile from the Mountaineers' Tacoma Clubhouse). Karen started our group some years ago, since then has very actively done the work of half a dozen people to offer us our various dinners, wine tastings, dances and parties, road trips to Mount Baker/the San Juans/Whistler Mountain etc, many other great times. Now she’s stepping aside for a well-deserved rest; we all need to work together to provide ongoing activities. If you’re at all interested in getting more involved, or just plain curious, please RSVP for this dinner on the TMS home page, show up and have some fun. No TMS experience necessary, a desire to share good times with others recommended. Sunday afternoon with friends new and old, "sitting on a dock of the bay, watching the tide roll away", can’t beat that!

Second: for the bicyclists out there, or those of you who’d like to try bicycling in a safe, non-judgmental environment, I’ve posted three more beginner-level bike rides on the TMS home page:

* This coming Saturday, June 15, 2:00PM, the east half of Orting’s Foothills Trail;

* Sunday, July 7, 2:00 pm, about 16 miles on Kent’s Green River Trail;

* Saturday, July 20, 10:00am, about 16 miles on Renton’s Cedar River Trail, with a snack stop and turnaround at the Red Dog Saloon, a local “biker” bar. Most of the bikers at the Red Dog ride Harleys, we’ll fit right in…

One reason I enjoy leading rides is introducing folks to the various bike trails in our area, some of which can be a little hard to find. Between now and – October? – I hope to lead bike trail rides on Seattle’s Burke-Gilman, Redmond’s Sammamish, Lacey’s Chehalis Western and the Yelm-Tenino, south King County’s Interurban, maybe some other bike trails an hour’s drive or less from Tacoma. All my bike rides are oriented to complete beginners, flat or almost flat, on paved bike trails with little or no exposure to cars. So if you enjoyed biking as a kid, or in college, or just want to give it a try please come out, we’d love to have you. If you need some encouragement, help getting a bike, help getting your bike ready, learning what to wear (helmets required!) or anything else please contact me, below; I'll be happy to give you free advice that's worth what you pay for it.  Bicycling is a fun, low-impact, cardio-healthy sport; if you've ever thought about cycling this is a great opportunity.

Third: for a bike ride that’s a little more challenging I’ve posted the June 30 Tour de Pierce, hosted by Pierce County Recreation. The TMS home page posting has a link to the Pierce County signup site. Tour de Pierce offers 12, 30 and 50 mile routes on mostly-quiet public roads. If you’ve never ridden in an organized bike event this is an excellent first time ride. Most rides don’t offer options as short as 12 miles, so if you’re really unsure about how this will work out come on down, you’ll finish and have fun!

I’ll do what I can to continue offering beginner level bike rides, maybe some beginner-level short hikes above timberline when the high country melts out. I hope I’ll see you at Sunday’s dinner, ready to help TMS continue its variety of activities. We live in one of the world’s great places - let’s enjoy!

Thanks for your time, onward and upward – Jim Harvey
