What we're about

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life sometimes it's hard to find the time to get away, let alone all the time to plan and organize a trip. That's what TIOA is for. We have a list of trips available and all you have to do is find the time to join us. If there is a trip you want to do, then let me know and I will figure out the logistics and post it. If you are a beginner and don't feel comfortable, or don't have the proper gear this is the perfect way to Take It Outdoors in a safe, fun and friendly way. If you aren't a beginner and are looking for a challenge; we have those trips as well.
When you come out on a trip you will find that TIOA is a fun loving community from all walks of life. Come on out and join the fun!!
See you soon!!
NOTE - A lot of planning goes into the trips we run. Please be considerate of all the members and the organizers of the group and do not be a "No Show". I know that sometimes issues spring up (family issues, medical, work, etc.) and that is completely understandable. In those cases please send a message saying you won't be able to make it. If you don't plan on attending, don't intend to mark it on your calendar or don't intend to make a best effort to come to the event please, please, please do not RSVP "yes" until you are ready.
Thank you much!!

Cost: $30 (own equipment) $55 (renting) (Schuylkill Canal Association Donation Included)

Join Take It Outdoors on a one-of-a-kind paddle through the Schuylkill Canal Associations Luminaries display of over 2000 Luminaries lining the canal. We're headed out to enjoy three festivities TIOA style: friends boats, lights, and fun.

Each year is a unique paddle. we have had warm weather, ice to paddle through and last year a good amount of snow to set the scene! Don't put that kayak away just yet, come out and welcome the season in style!

Festive, but safe, decorations are welcome and encouraged...but not required.

We will meet at the Lock 60 Parking lot before 3:30 pm and plan to launch shortly thereafter. The access road to the park will be closed at 3:30 so be sure to arrive before then. We will first paddle the Schuylkill River to the portage. As darkness falls, we decorate our boats, then continue up the canal to the luminarias and SCA gathering.

Once everyone is out, and the kayaks are loaded on the trailers and cars we are all required to leave at the same time as they will re-open the access road for us to leave at the same time.

Cost if you have your own kayak = $30 (includes: guides, contribution to the SCA as a thank you for all of their hard work throughout the year)

Cost if you need a kayak= $55 (includes kayak, pfd, paddle, guides, and contribution to the SCA as a thank you for all of their hard work throughout the year)

DECORATION Restrictions:
Any decorations which impede your paddling ability, have loose parts (cords, strings, etc that are not secured to the boat) that may tangle you in the event of an emergency, any liquid fuel powered, open flame, flaky or hazardous materials are not permitted. Except for glowsticks, All decorations must be secured to the boat and not to you, your paddle, or your PFD.

Winter Clothing:
This is a cold weather paddle and we highly recommend you Layer up with wool, synthetics (like Under Armor and other similar brands), or wool-synthetic blends. Try your best to aviod cotton. Please pack an extra bag of dry clothes in case of emergency. We will have extra dry bags.

Night Equipment:
PA Law requires your boat to have a white light on board. This can be a headlamp, or a deck mounted kayak light. We provide extra lights if needed. We plan to enjoy the luminaria and our own festive lights but be prepared with additional lights for safety. When we are paddling in the lighted section of the luminaries we ask that you turn your headlight off completely.

All paddlers must be at least 16 years of age to participate in this event.
