ONLINE: Never-ending Story: Florida’s Love/Hate Relationship--Science Education

Details

RSVP is required: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/the-never-ending-story-/register. Brandon Haught is doing a TIES* webinar. Several of us have seen his presentation at FREEFLO, he is a great speaker. While some science teachers would be interested, the topic is more for the CFI audience. He discusses the creationist/evolution battles in the state of Florida. This particular webinar is set for May 11th at 8 PM EST.

Brandon Haught:
Science teacher, author, spokesperson and co-founder of Florida Citizens for Science (Remember when CFI Tampa Bay worked to get this off the ground?)

Brandon is a former marine corps combat correspondent and former public information officer for the Volusia County sheriff's office. He is currently a Volusia County high school science teacher

He authored Going Ape: Florida's Battles over Evolution in the Classroom. In his spare time, Brandon advocates for science education in Florida through his work as a board member of Florida Citizens for Science. Haught was a guest on the popular radio show Science Friday, wrote a column published in the World Views section of the science journal Nature, and was featured in dozens of articles and had op-eds published in media outlets all around Florida and the U.S.—

*TIES https://tieseducation.org/ is the very successful Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science, founded by Florida science teacher Bertha Vazquez, Director. TIES is a program of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science, now an arm of the Center for Inquiry.

The purpose of TIES is to give middle school science teachers all the content knowledge and teaching tools they need to effectively cover their state’s evolution standards. TIES materials, available for free on the TIES website, include presentation slides, hands-on activities, a guided reading, an exam review, and the corresponding exam. Extremely valuable online resources and recommended readings are also included.
