xpost: Compassion Action: Humanists are Changing the Landscape of Grassroots Aid

Since its founding more than 10 years ago, Foundation Beyond Belief has sought not only to unite the freethought community in philanthropy and service, but also to upend colonialist models of charity and undermine the systems that cause the need for aid to begin with. Seráh Blain, a Central Florida resident, will address these and other questions in her presentation:

• What does Humanist philanthropy and service look like?

• Can Humanist service teams distinguish ourselves not just from the oppression of religious charity, but other forms of oppression as well?

• How are Humanists today working in their neighborhoods and towns to create new models of grassroots aid, and how can we uphold Humanist principles in our personal practice of ethics as well as our service work?

Seráh Blain is the Communications Director for Foundation Beyond Belief as well as a mom, an activist, and Partner and Senior Strategist at Spectrum Experience (a Humanist brand and PR firm). With more than 20 years of political and nonprofit communications experience working on secular, Humanist, and LGBTQ issues, Seráh has dedicated her career to advancing social justice through public policy and grassroots community organizing.

Seráh has served on the Board of Directors for the Secular Coalition for Arizona, the Prescott Pride Center, and the Arizona Interfaith Movement. Seráh was the recipient of Foundation Beyond Belief’s Humanist Innovator of the Year Award in 2014.
