Data is make or break for DevOps

Needs a location

DevOps is only as fast as its slowest process. Today, parallel teams and frameworks hit a pinch point when they require data and environments. They are often met by a siloed data provisioning team, equipped with a mix of scripts, in-house tools, and repetitive manual processes. This central team is quickly overwhelmed by the volume and variety of requests created by rapid and iterative development. Testers then face lengthy waits for constrained data sets, while inaccurate and incomplete data undermines testing rigor.

There is a mismatch today between DevOps pipelines and Test Data Management “best practices”. DevOps emphasizes rapid automation, parallelization, and an ability to react to continuous change. Test data “provisioning” relies on repetitive, manual processes that cannot quickly satisfy changing requests. A new approach is needed, especially as the rate and complexity of data requests is only likely to keep increasing. DevOps pipelines must make exact data combinations available on demand during CI/CD processes, test automation, and manual development work.

This session will discuss an approach for modernizing TDM, moving from slow and siloed provisioning to “just in time” test data allocation. Veteran test data inventor, Huw Price, will explore techniques for making data available on the fly to testers, developers, and automation frameworks. The parallel data allocation is responsive to differences in requests, ensuring that every test and tester has the data they need, exactly when and where they need it. Join Huw at Tampa Bay DevOps to discover how Test Data Automation can unblock your DevOps pipelines!

About the speaker:

Huw Price is a test data management veteran and a serial entrepreneur, now the founder of his fifth software start-up. Huw’s 30 years of experience in software delivery has brought a collaboration with a wide range of organizations, large and small. He has crafted strategies and innovative technologies for test data success, on projects ranging from large-scale migrations from mainframe to open systems, to building best-of-breed test automation frameworks for microservices.
