Build your own IKEA-style augmented reality app!

Details

• What we'll do
You’ve probably heard of, seen, or even tried out IKEA Place, the iOS app that answers the question “What would this piece of IKEA furniture look like in this room?” It lets you use augmented reality to select an item from their catalog and drop it into the room you’re in. It’s been available in iOS for a few months now, thanks to Apple’s ARKit, and it’s just become available on Android, what with the recent release of Google’s ARCore.

In this session, we’ll look at writing our own version of the IKEA Place app. You’ll learn how to detect horizontal and vertical surfaces using ARKit, and then place furniture on the horizontal surfaces, and posters over the vertical surfaces. You’ll be able to start writing your own sophisticated augmented reality apps after this meetup!

• What to bring
This meetup will be a “code along with me” exercise. That means you’ll need to bring a Mac laptop with the Xcode 9.3 beta installed, as well as an ARKit-ready iOS device (iPhone 6S or later, iPad Pro, or 2017 edition iPad) running the iOS 11.3 beta. You can download these betas from developer.apple.com.

• Important to know
Nobody learns well on an empty stomach, so we’ll provide pizza, soft drinks, and water, courtesy of my employer, our venue-provider and sponsor: Sourcetoad!
