The Needs of The Many, The Needs of The Few
It's an age old adage that you can't be all things to all people, and to even attempt to do so would mean your product or service will suffer. A known best practice in design is to focus on a specific set of people (your target market), or design for what the majority of your users do (the 80/20 rule). However, designs need to account for as many people as possible – regardless of who your market is. This talk will cover how designing for the few can result in a better design for the many, as well as cover practical guidelines for designing for everyone.
Chris Durbin is a UX Designer in the Concept Lab at Amazon designing the future. She holds a Bachelors in Design from Full Sail and spends most of her waking moments studying why humans do the things we do. In the past 5 years, she’s designed for every type of experience imaginable: phones, tablets, smartwatches, televisions, and voice.
Outside of work, Chris exercises her passion for books, beer & lifelong learning by way of UX Book Club, a monthly meet up with author Q & As that covers a smattering of topics related to experience design.
