Talks Details:

  • AWS CDK – a perfect IaC tool of choice for serverless? (Ari Palo - Alma Media)
There are many Infrastructure-as-Code tools out there, but AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) is the one I'd argue is the best fit for developers who wish to build truly cloud-native / serverless solutions on top of AWS. This talk covers what CDK is all about, what's happening in CDK next and how & why it's a great fit for serverless.

  • Cost awareness in serverless (Heikki Simperi - Solita)
In serverless nothing is free. Every new request is going to cost more because no “free” overprovisioned resources is available. How to approach cost estimation/management during planning phase? What things developer should to keep in mind?

  • Case example of a serverless backend. Expectation vs reality (Hussein Ismail - Etteplan Oyj)
The goal of the customer project was to create a solution that includes all the bells and whistles you would expect from a typical ERP / operational system. It would support thousands of concurrent users and millions of transactions per year. The plan was to utilize a serverless hosting architecture on top of Azure Functions, which could bring advantages to billing and scaling. In this talk we will go through what actually happened and what were some of the pros/cons of the choices.

  • Automatic Testing with AWS Lambdas (Eetu Rinta-Jaskari - Profit Software)
Testing serverless functions automatically can be a difficult task due to dependencies to cloud infrastructure and services. Additionally, the lack of tooling and observability capabilities in cloud platforms bring additional challenges to testing. Based on a master's thesis, the talk discusses different automatic testing approaches collected by reviewing guidebooks for developing and testing serverless functions (Lambdas) in AWS. It is also explored how the Pulumi Infrastructure-as-Code framework can be used to ease test automation.

Speakers:
Ari Palo (Alma Media) Lead Technologist at Alma Media, recognized AWS community builder focusing on developer tooling and holds multiple cloud certifications. Lambda was released to GA in 2015, Ari has used it in production since 2016 CDK was released to GA in 2019, Ari has used it in production since 2018
