When and Why to use GraphQL

OVERVIEW:

GraphQL is an open source query language for APIs. Developed by Facebook, it was released in 2015, and since then, has been gaining a lot of popularity in the software industry.
Often compared and contrasted with REST and other web service architectures, GraphQL is being adopted very frequently by software development teams across the globe.

While there have been many articles and sessions around HOW to use GraphQL, this session will not focus on that.
Instead, this session will explore WHEN and WHY to use GraphQL.

DEMO:

We will take a concrete, real world application and design RESTful services to serve the application.
Then we will introduce GraphQL into the system and use it to redesign the API's.
Finally, we will implement new features using the created GraphQL schema.

Through this exercise, we will know when and why to use GraphQL.

PRE-REQUISTES:

Participants must have a basic understanding of REST. Experience of designing REST APIs would be helpful.
