Competing priorities?
Too many requests?
How do you identify critical items?
How do you make transparent and consistent choices?
Do you have prioritisation tools in your toolbox when you need them?
Would you like to be able to rapidly identify what activities you should focus on and what activities you should ignore?
Attend this session to learn three prioritisation techniques that can help you gain control and make the best use of limited time and resources.

Session description
Time is the only thing we truly cannot control and it is a limited resource.
We would like to do so many things, but we have to face the reality that we cannot do everything and we cannot please everyone.
To be effective, we can assign priorities and identify critical items to address first. By assigning a priority order, we are in fact choosing which items will be done, which ones might be done, and which ones are definitively not going to be done within the time we have available.
The techniques I will present during this practical session are:

  1. Eisenhower matrix - a lightweight tool that helps to quickly identify the most important and most urgent items in your list
  2. PACE matrix - a medium weight tool that identifies the items to prioritise, the ones to plan, the ones to consider, and those to eliminate because the benefits are not worth the effort
  3. Weighted Shortest Job First - a prioritisation tool that gives priority to the smallest items with a higher cost of delay to maximise benefits. The effort required to apply this tool is worth for long term planning (months, quarters, ...)

During this session, I will illustrate the techniques and invite groups of people to apply them to a fictional product backlog. These techniques can be applied to anything, not only backlogs.

Anybody can benefit from this session, however, I recommend it for Product Owners because they are often caught in the middle of conflicting priorities while at the same time teams look at them for direction.
