Details

This is an opportunity to try a little basic ‘Sports’ climbing in Woodcroft Quarry, Chepstow alongside the very picturesque River Wye Valley. There are routes F3 thro to F7b all of which are pre-bolted with relatively new stainless steel bolts, so it’s a relatively safe location for the inexperienced. Having said that, please be aware that there will be NO climbing instructors present and everyone climbs at their own risk. For those that haven’t been away with us before scrambling or climbing, we will ask of your indoor / outdoor climbing experience before agreeing your attendance. This is to protect all participants.

We’ll be using the guide book “Wye Valley Sport” by Gordon Jenkin & Mark Davies, a cracking little book, available from Dick’s Climbing in Bristol. If we get really carried away, as well as Woodcroft Quarry, which will be our starting point, we can also look at Wintours Leap and Ban-y-gor, all within 5 mins walking from my front door!

Happy for people for people to do one or both days and turning up on the Fri or Sat night or whatever suits. Flexible as you want! As long as we have more than two people we can climb! Basic logistics as follows:

Fri evening: Meet up in a pub (food available before 9pm), before being led back to my place for a follow on beer / sleep.
Sat day: Climb! Starting with the really easy F3’s and working up to people’s capabilities
Sat night: Food provided by Jackie’s Café
Sun day: Climb! Maybe staying in the quarry, maybe venturing to Wintours Leap or Ban-y-gor. Will make call on the day.
Sun pm: Slide off home when you’ve had enough.

Accommodation: My gaff

Bring:
Harness, belay, hard hat (all mandatory), and quickdraws if you have any. If you have a rope and any other handy bits for climbing, bring them along!
Pillow, sleeping bag and comfy sleep mat (limited bed space as my son has half inched two of my beds!).
Grub for breakfast and your lunch (it’s a long walk to the nearest shop!)
Plus any shandy you may wish to consume of an evening!
