Crickhowell - 10 miles in the Brecon Beacons

My friend Richard is hosting the Crickhowell walk.

A high level walk starting in Crickhowell, taking in Table Mountain and Pen Cerrigh-calch. Views across Black Mountains & Beacons are stunning.

It's around 8 miles - although I've climbed this mountain a couple of times, I intend to use a different route this will do a recce in coming weeks to determine exact length. Level of strenuousness: 8 miles doesn't sound too bad...but it is up and down a decent size mountain. Legs and lungs will know about it - but the views justify the effort.

No pubs en route so packed lunch required.

Meeting point is Resource and Information centre in Crickhowell (NP8 1BN) at 10.30 am. Allow 1hour 30 mins travel from Bristol (anticipating delays at Severn bridge)

Hi. I'm interested in this walk. Is there anyone I could hitch a lift with and share the petrol cost? I live in Bath but can get to Bristol.

Nick/Claudine, due to poor weather forecast have decided to postpone this walk to Saturday August 9th.

Claudine, can you change the date on this BBE event page?

How long do you expect this walk to take please? 3 hours for 10 miles seems a trifle optimistic.

      Wasn't aware I'd said 3hours....5 - 6 hours is more realistic

directions for those with no sat nav:
    West to J24
    A449 north towards Monmouth
After a few miles exit left to A40 to Abergavenny.
Just before reaching Abergavenny you come to a large double roundabout. On the first part you have to go left - on the next section take 2nd exit to A465 to Merthyr Tydfil.
At next r/bout take 3rd exit to A4077 to Crickhowell.
The approach to Crickhowell sees you turn right at a set of traffic lights to go over a narrow bridge crossing the river Usk.
Keep left after the bridge and then turn right at junction with A40 onto High street to go into Crickhowell town centre.
After about 100 yards when you get to the centre take left fork onto Beaufort street (although I couldn't see the street name).
A few hundred yards later go left on Greenhill Way then first left again into the car park.
...and then look for the black mariah!

All, bit of a update..did recce a while ago. The actual route I want to do is nearer 10 miles than 8. However if you're worried about doing more than 8 miles, don't be as all the climbing is over after 4 miles...and the views are great up there.
About those first 4miles....the first 3 are quite steep. It's not a race so we'll stop regularly to catch breath...but you do need to be prepared for a bit of a lung burner during this part.
Just a couple of other advisories
Even if the weather's nice take a wind proof top as it can be a bit blowey.
Also there are a few streams to won't need wellies but waterproof boots are a good idea to avoid wet feet.
...and don't forget coins for the car park.
Will post manual directions to meet point shortly plus my mobile number if you get lost
One important last point - as it is relatively high up, it's not the place to be if it's tipping I'll keep a close eye on the forecast and probably cancel if seriously wet.

All, please note that this walk is now on 12th July, not 19th. Hopefully Claudine will officially change the date shortly...
