From Mr. King:
Come celebrate the Grand Army of the Republic Building in downtown Detroit, which was honored with the 2019 Governor's Award for Historic Preservation.
A grand meeting hall for Civil War veterans, it was completed around 1900. Overall, Michigan sent more than 90,000 men to the war front. When the first soldiers reported to duty in Washington, D.C. in 1861, President Abraham Lincoln was so moved that he welcomed the troops with open arms and said, "Thank God for Michigan."
Congratulations to Tom and David Carleton, and Sean Emery, along with Michigan.gov and City of Detroit Government, for restoring one of the most historic and treasured structures in Detroit — The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Building!
Come celebrate a community gem and the team behind its success — recipients of the 2019 Governor's Award for Historic Preservation!
As part of this special event, I'm humbled to do a book-signing for Detroit: Engine of America (Chapter 7 covers Detroit and Michigan's Civil War contributions, of which the G.A.R. honors)!
And all book sales support Beyond Basics!
