Poetry Discussion Group

Details

Have you been looking for a group of poetry lovers with whom to share the work that inspires you? Would you love to spend an hour or two in a cozy space on a chilly morning, discussing your favorite poets and ideas about what role poetry plays in society? If so, please join our poetry discussion group. We will begin with a broad discussion of why poetry is significant to us, and share specific pieces that have touched us in some way. If there is continued interest, in future discussion groups we can focus on different themes, such as poetry as protest, humorous and satirical poetry, and, of course, love poetry. We will also incorporate writing prompts to engage our own creative energies and see what emerges!

Workshop Agenda:

Poetry as protest! Whether against a political figure or a personal relationship, poetry can help us to push back. This week I’d like to ask participants to bring in a poem that has inspired them to question the status quo, stand up and speak out. I was originally planning to devote this week to love poetry, but as the new year begins I’m finding myself feeling riled up and ready for change. And love is patient, and can wait until February.

Like last month, we will each read a poem by another poet during the first hour and discuss how it inspired us to protest against something or someone. During the second hour I will provide some writing prompts and we will work on writing some protest poetry of our own. I’m looking forward to another lively and insightful discussion!
