Magical Realism is 80+ years old with a definition that, at times, seems hard to pin down. But what is Magical realism? While it is often linked to starting out of Latin America with authors like Jorge Louis Borges and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, it appears within the work of many other writers ranging from Toni Morrison to Maxine Hong Kingston’s memoir.
This workshop is an opportunity for fiction writers who want to do more to explore realms of magical realism in their work, for creative non-fiction writers who want to explore genre bending, and for poets who want to explore the links between magical realism within verse.

Participants will:
• Learn about the tenants of what makes a piece of writing magical realism.
• Observe some of the ways that non-fiction and poets have injected magical realism into their states of truth while also looking at pieces of fiction that engage the method.
• Take some material from their own lives using prompts to engage in the genre within their own work on the page in any of these genres.

Bring an open mind, a pen, and a notebook to walk across the bridge of the magical into the real with a twist.
