Join us for a master class in pitching articles with writer, editor, and writing instructor, Mike Dunphy.
The difference between writing an article and selling an article is the same difference between building a car and selling it. Both involve a car but a very different set of skills. At the heart of the selling skillset is the ability to effectively "pitch" an idea to a publication. In this session, we will cover the basics of pitching at the technical and holistic level, including the essential componants of a good pitch, as well as related tips and tricks to get the pitch noticed, appreciated, and accepted. Attendees will also get the chance to put the instruction into action by writing a practice pitch.

A Burlington native, Mike Dunphy counts 16 years in the publishing industry as a writer, editor, and manager, having worked at every rung of the editorial ladder, from novice freelancer to editor in chief. Until the pandemic, he served as managing editor for several travel magazines but now works as a senior editorial manager for a national marketing company. As a writer, his articles have appeared in a wide range of commercial and trade publications, including CNN, USA Today, Forbes and PBS, and he wrote the Vermont guidebook for Fodor's twice. His career as an educator goes back even further, and he continues to teach classes in article writing, travel writing, creative nonfiction, and self-editing at Gotham Writers Workshop in NYC. Lastly, Mike brings tremendous international experience, too, having lived 15 years abroad as a student, Peace Corps volunteer, ESL teacher, and journalist.
BWW is grateful for the Burlington City Arts Fundation for support of this event.
