Your weekly update from Carlo - A lot of good stuff inside!

Ciao a Tutti!

As is the norm lately, there is a lot going on so I have put the update in an outline format so that hopefully it is easier to find the information that you are interested in:

1. Social Meet-ups

a. The big news this week is the “Amazing Race – Italian Style” kicking off at Paolo’s Gelato this     Sunday! This is going to be a lot of fun! Cindy now has a lot of details posted online so those participating be sure to check the web-site for the details!

b. In addition we have a lot of other great events coming up including a Mozzarella workshop, a party, a wine tasting, a dance workshop, going out for pizza and our 2nd annual group anniversary cookout at my house! Events have been drawing bigger responses lately so if you are interested in any of the above, you may want to RSVP soon! Details and RSVP available at

c. We are looking for members who would like to host a social event at your home sometime during the following weekends; The weekends starting March 9th, 23rd, April 6th, May 4th, 19th and June 9th. You can choose to host it Friday evening, Saturday evening or Sunday. You can set a limit on attendance and decide on exactly what you would like to do. Home meet-ups (social events) always seem to be more intimate and may a friendship have started at them. In the past folks have had pot-lucks, Italian movie night, game night, just a social gathering as well as many other ideas. It would be up to you. If you think you would like help our group by hosting an event, please email me. We greatly appreciate it.

2. Learning Italian

a. Well the big news for the workshops this week is definitely the new Pronunciation class starting this Saturday! Sort of a “Pronunciation Boot Camp”. We are going to spend 6 weeks (1 hour classes) focusing only on the Italian alphabet and pronunciation of Italian words. No learning vocabulary, grammatical rules or conversation. This is strictly for learning how to pronounce Italian. We have filled this class but if we get enough interest in the way of people on a waiting list we will open up another class. More information is available at at the bottom of the page.

3. Trip to Italy Poll

a. As you have probably heard we canceled this year’s trip to Italy as we just did not have enough people to be able to take the trip we wanted to take. We came much closer than last year and it progressed better as I learned a lot about putting a trip together but we still fell short. Well, several people have asked if we are going to try for next year and I would like to but before I start the wheels turning I would really like your feedback. I think we can do and have a great time, 2 weeks in Italy, seeing the sights, staying in Italian hotels often off the beaten path (not quite as touristy) with a package of Italian cooking, culture and language lessons to go with the tour not to mention, wine tasting, flavored grappa tasting and adequate free time to go out and soak up the culture and test your language skills in addition to a reunion of us and our Italian pen pals in Rome! This may actually have worked out for the best. If enough of us (I would like to see 25 to 30 of us) want to do this we now have 15 months to prepare. We can set our date, have monthly or bi-monthly meeting discussing exactly what to expect, what we will be doing, seeing photos of where we can be going. We can even set up an escrow account for those that would like to make monthly installments (fully refundable) so that the cost of the trip is spread over 15 months. I really would like to see this happen but once again, I don’t want to spin my wheels or waste anybody’s time so please if you could, please go and vote on our latest poll letting me know your thoughts about a 2013 trip. You can find the poll at:

4. Facebook Page

a. For those of you learning the Italian language, one of the biggest challenges is not forgetting what you have learned in class due to a lack of opportunity to use your Italian. Well, we have something for you! The Il Tavolo Italiano Facebook page. We have a few members using it already! Some to get news out to members and others trying a hand at communicating with others in Italian. So what you do you say? Let’s get some conversation going about anything you want to talk about in Italian on our Facebook page at:

5. YouTube Anniversary

a. Just a side note that I wanted to share with you as I found it encouraging, we are rapidly approaching our 1 year anniversary of putting instruction/vocabulary/conversation videos on YouTube. On February 22, 2011 We posted our first video on conjugating Italian verbs in the imperfect tense and now we have 108 videos on YouTube, Somebody has watch one of our videos over 25,000 times (5 of our videos have now been seen over 1,000 times each) Our month viewing average is now over 4,200 viewing and we have 77 subscribers that are not from our geographical area. In fact we often receive emails from people literally all over the world as a result of these videos. Thank you for making that possible in a variety of ways!

6. Pen pal program

a. Once again for you students of Italian we have another opportunity for you to use the Italian you know! It is our pen pal program. Many of you are advancing in your use of the Italian Language and you are ready to take it to the next level. This can help. Find out more at:

7. Sponsors

a. Our sponsors are important to our group in several ways. Some invite to have workshops there keeping us from having to rent space and keep our prices very economical. Others offer discount to card members adding real tangible value to our $25.00 Annual Membership Card and others still opt to advertise on which also assists in keeping our costs for classes, etc. as low as possible. To be honest, I am not the best at finding these sponsors. Instead they are almost entirely because some member talked to a business owner or manager they knew and then put me in contact with them. Thank you for that. If you know of a business that you feel could benefit from being a sponsor either because of our discount card program or advertising on our site, I would great appreciate your help in the way of referrals. It does not have to be a restaurant and in fact it would be beneficial to have sponsors in other industries. So if you are so inclined to help me in this area please feel free to email me.

8. Thank you

a. And finally I just want to say thank you to all of you who make this group possible and make it what it is today. A beautiful group of people sharing their love for Italian food, culture and/or language. This is all possible only because of you. I am humbled to be associated with all of you, a truly great and beautiful group of people! Thank you.

Ci vediamo presto!
