Workshop: Intro to D3 (Wk 2)

What

Join us for another CDVG workshop where we will learn about D3 (http://d3js.org/). This javascript library has become one of the essential tools for high quality, interactive visualizations on the web. Andy Kirk, of visualizingdata (http://www.visualisingdata.com/) hailed it, and its rapidly expanding community, as one of the 2011 & 2012's ten most significant developments in visualization (http://www.visualisingdata.com/index.php/2012/07/10-significant-visualisation-developments-january-to-june-2012/). Take a look at the impressive inventory of examples (https://github.com/mbostock/d3/wiki/Gallery) maintained by d3's creator, Mike Bostock.

Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of Javascript is required. There are online tutorials available that are sufficient preparation. Code Academy (http://www.codecademy.com/tracks/javascript) and w3Schools (http://www.w3schools.com/js/default.asp) offer two options. Please bring your laptop with a browser that supports SVG (any version equal to, or greater than, these browser releases: Firefox 15, Chrome 22, Safari 5.1, Opera 12, IE 9). When & Where

The D3 workshop will be taught in the IMSA classroom at 1871 (https://www.meetup.com/The-Chicago-Data-Visualization-Group/events/89508672/www.1871.com) from 6 - 9 pm on three consecutive Mondays: November 26, December 3, and December 10. Please bring $5 if you want pizza that evening. Drinks are available for purchase at 1871.
