Simone de Beauvoir: The Second Sex - part 4

Details

TO BE RESCHEDULED.

We'll read Volume 2, Part 4, Chapter 14 of Simone de Beauvoir's "The Second Sex" -- “The Independent Woman.”

Simone de Beauvoir’s massive, wide-ranging ‘The Second Sex’ is the founding text of modern feminism and an important part of the canon of phenomenology. Beauvoir’s focus on women’s lived experience presaged the feminist consciousness-raising groups of the 1970s and provided a template for thinkers like Kate Millett and Germaine Greer. More recently, poststructuralists like Judith Butler have taken inspiration from Beauvoir’s famous declaration that "One is not born, but rather becomes, woman." Beauvoir also attempts to find a middle way between determinism – exemplified by dialectical materialism and psychoanalysis – and existentialist liberalism.

We’ll read four key sections from the book. It’s available from bookstores and online sellers, or download it below.

NOTE! MAKE SURE TO READ THE 2009 TRANSLATION.
